Anyone ever try to make Korean BBQ at home?

I've been thinking about trying to make it at home. I wonder if an electric griddle or grill would work, or if I would need to buy one of the grills like they use in the restaurants and hook it to gas. Looking at the marinade recipes they seem pretty simple, but the side dished may be quite a lot of work depending on how many you decided to do. Any thoughts or advice?

Costco has a prepared bulgogi that is really good. I throw it on my blackstone griddle and it is awesome.

I have. Its a lot of prep work and ingredient sourcing, but can be a fun way to entertain. Be careful using a traditional American approach to a grill. Most Korean marinades have a good bit of natural sugars on them and a high test outdoor grill (either gas or charcoal) can quickly turn char into burned. Get the grill surface very hot, but lower the heat once meat is introduced.

Go to an asian market and just pick up a jar of marinade. Marinate overnight and grill it, braise it, bake it, etc. It'll taste great... no need to add anything.

Where did you buy your meat? Did you buy marinade or make your own? Did you buy prepared side dishes or make them?

I'd like to try several different kinds. Short ribs, Bulgogi, chicken, pork, shrimp, maybe squid. Do they sell different kinds of marinade for different kinds of meat?

Made some bulgogi tacos a while back turned out pretty good. I just googled a recipe, I remember there were a shite load of ingredients.
I cooked the meat on this
On top of my charcoal grill

I just went over to Hong Kong Market for most of the ingredients, including the meat.
Made own marinade and a bunch of kimchis (started this the week before). My house smelled like a fart for a week, so I dont really make kimchi anymore. Plus the jarred product is delicious.

Yes there are. That said, you can use that any jar on any type of meat.

Are you doing kalbi (short ribs) or Bulgogi?
If kalbi ribs, then just go the store and buy some Yoshida's marinade. Marinade for a while and stick em on the grill. The side cut short ribs cook super fast so don't go too far away.

I have a small griddle that uses the small bottles of gas that you see in some Korean BBQ places. It works pretty well and is fairly easy to clean. Just know that it will cause some smoke, so near your hood vent is wise. As others have said, you can go to an Asian supermarket and most of them will have the short ribs or meat already sliced. As far as marinades go, it's fairly simple and I find playing with recipes to your taste. In a pinch, the marinades in jars will do, but IMO they are often too commercial. Other than Kimchi (which I would recommend you buy), the sides are pretty easy if you have some small jars to let them marinate and blend together. Often, in Korean restaurants, you will find a wide variety of different sides, so it's more about finding the flavor you want and inventing some sides.
