Anyone ever make a Cane Syrup cake? (Gateau Sirop)

I'm going to make one tomorrow, but the recipes online are all so different. Some call for buttermilk and sugar and some no milk or sugar at all. Any pointers?

I am going to assume you want a Louisiana syrup cake
Steen's Cane Syrup
Here is the "Gateau de Sirop" recipe from Steen's
It is a good spice cake recipe that we have made.

I believe hungryone has. Hopefully she’ll see your post.

That one has no milk or sugar which I find odd

1-1/2 cups of Steens is a boat load of 'sugar'. I think you need warm water to break down the syrup, I'm sure you could warm 3/4 cup of milk a roll with that, couldn't hurt.

I'll probably just follow the recipe

I came to post the same thing. The first time I ordered it, the server recommended I get it with chocolate ice cream, as opposed to vanilla. A surprisingly good combination.
Here's an old recipe I have for it...
Ingredients
2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups cane syrup
1 egg, beaten until frothy
2/3 cup chopped pecans
11/2 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 cup hot water
Preheat oven to 350 F Butter and flour a 13x9 baking pan; shake out excess flour. Set pan aside. Sift flour, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt into a bowl; set aside. In bowl of an electric mixer, combine oil, cane syrup and egg. Beat just to blend. Add pecans and beat to incorporate. Combine baking soda with hot water and stir to blend. Add flour mixture to oil-syrup mixture alternately with hot water mixture, adding each in 3 additions and stopping to scrape down side of bowl after each addition. Then beat just to smooth out batter (about 15 seconds longer). Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven until cake springs back when touched (about 45 minutes). Serve hot or warm and top with vanilla or chocolate ice cream

The Steens recipe was great. Easy to make and delicious.

Almost exactly an old family spice cake recipe from a long dead aunt.
Funny thing - was pre internet and I doubt she ever heard of Steens cane syrup because she lived out in the country about ten miles east of Inverness, MS.

I really liked it. Wasn't too sweet.
