If you're using Adobe Reader, there is a "Bookmarks" icon in the upper left hand part of the screen. It's pretty much the index but better. Click on the recipe and it takes you directly to that page without scrolling through 500 pages.

Yes, I should have pointed out that each recipe has a bookmark. That does qualify as an index, I guess.
I had collected these recipes quite a while back and they were one recipe to a file in Word format.
The software was able to merge all those files into one PDF, and it created a bookmark for each input file.
