Have a friend there and he specifically asked for TD recs. I searched and found nothing.

So, Sarasota isn’t a culinary wasteland... But it’s trying hard to be.
Here’s my recommendations..
Yummy House - Actually a local chain; but, far and away the best Chinese you’ll get. Having been to China this place is as close to what I ate there as you’ll get.
The Columbia - Another local chain, moderately priced Spanish/Cuban fare. The 1905 salad is very iconic and they are well known for paella.
Yoders - Theres an Amish village in Sarasota. Home style cooking done well. Best known for their fried chicken and amazing pie selection.
Wild Card Selection... Tokaj - Hungarian Food. Lots of pickled this and that; food is heavy on paprika. Something you just won’t find everywhere and a wide selection of Hungarian wines (which are surprisingly good).

Yoders. Lot of great Amish restaurants.
Great Cuban food too. Just have them check out Yelp. Lot of neat little restaurants in Bradenton/Sarasota/Venice.

The Columbia and Yoder’s are great. We also like Owen’s Fish Camp in downtown Sarasota.
A great dive for lunch would be Council’s right across from the courthouse in Bradenton. Hamburgers served off a 100 year old grill cooked right in front of you. No plates. Hamburger is served on a napkin. Feels like going back in time 40 years. Old pool hall.

I like Mediterraneo right off of Main Street for pizza and The Cottage on Siesta Key for seafood/sandwiches. Fresh Kitchen is a decent, fast casual chain out of Tampa w/a chipotle style set up for bowls if they happen to be at University and 75 (wouldn’t go out of my way for it).
Indigenous is probably the most hyped restaurant in Sarasota, and it’s not bad, but you’ll definitely need reservations (reservations are also prudent for virtually any sit down restaurant this time of year).
Overall, the food is really lacking for an area with so many restaurants, but there are some cuisines well-represented that you don’t commonly see, e.g. Peruvian (Selva, et. al.) and Amish as outlined (Der Dutchman and Yoders are close to each other in an Amish area off of Bahia Vista), and there are a lot of fun restaurants with passable food and decent drinks/views to compensate (e.g., Boca, Social, Owen’s Fish Camp, Dry Dock, Columbia, etc.).
