Been looking around and thinking about picking up one of these cookers. Found this one with a cart for $259 today. I have never really used one of these, how much of a learning curve is there?

My parents have one that I've used. Pretty good product for the price IMO. Hold temps very well (I imagine not as good as a BGE but I've never used one). Not much of a learning curve at all.

I posted that deal the other day and got little response

I paid about 300 for mine without cart 2 years ago and I still use it a couple times a week.

It has held up extremely well and cooks things very well. It can do almost anything a BGE can do and it's got a very good size cooking space.

I couldn't recommend it more.

Thanks for the replies, I will probably pick it up. I have been looking for a deal on a gas grill as well but this came along first.

Worth every penny. I paid 350 with no regrets. If you currently don't use lump charcoal, you will get your money back in no time.

There is a little learning curve figuring out the right vent settings for certain temps. The hardest is keeping it under 300 degrees but once you figure it out, it is no problem. The key to these things is to bring the temp up slowly. Once you get too hot, it takes a while to get it to go down due to how well it retains temp.

If something happened to mine, I would buy another at regular price.

You will love it. Just season that cast iron grate and keep it oiled and it will perform great.

I bought a weber replacement grate and a pizza stone to serve as smoking stone.

It costs about 12 bucks total compared to the 40 bucks CG wanted for the stone.

I saw that tip on YouTube

LINK

As croaka said, there are cheaper options, but I just ordered it all at the same time.

Also, if you plan to buy it from the website, go to a site like giftcardgranny and buy home Depot e-giftcards first. You can save an extra 10% and get the ecode emailed to you instantly and just use that on the home Depot site

Thanks Croacka!

I bought one after reading your post. I got a shipping confirmation yesterday that it should be ready for pickup early next week.

It seems like a great deal. I've never owned a grill like this one so I am really looking forward to it.

I will say the thermometer on the grill, as with most is pretty unreliable

I use an infrared thermometer when doing high temp cooks and use a maverick when doing long cooks/smokes

So what are "must have" accessories I should get? Thanks.

I like to use a chimney starter, lump charcoal, and I use the weber lighter cubes in the chimney starter to light the charcoal.

Nothing else is really needed

Heres the thing with the Akorn vs BGE that ive noticed, the BGE will a certain temp longer and more precise but the Akorn will hold a temp within 20 degrees of what you want for a comparable amount of time. We used an Akorn and a BGE for a BBQ comp on the 4th of july and the BGE held around 225 for a solid 7 hours. The Akorn would hold 260-290 for 6 hours. I do find that the BGE is a little easier to bring the temp down if its gets a little hot than the Akorn.
