If you anf your family likes art...definitely hit the Ogden.
A free ferry to Algiers can be nice...
A drive down Magazine can be nice....Perlis is having a huge sale right now (they have women's, men's and boys clothes). Also on Mag is Sucre...though I think boys may appreciate Creole Creamery more.
The Historic NOLA collection on royal is free and usually has great exhibits.
If your kids are into music, I highly reccomend Jeremy Davenport at the Ritz...I was there last weekend and saw plenty of families enjoying him singing Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, etc.
La Divina off Jackson Square is good for ice cream and The Roosevelt Hotel has a pastry shop, malts, etc called Teddy's.
A streetcar ride may be too hot, but if you want to drive around just shoot down St. Charles all the way to the levee...take a left on Leake Ave/River Rd. and that turn into Magazine...you caqn zig zag through the numbered streets in the Garden District then continue down Magazine to the Lower Garden District/Coliseum Square (beautiful victorian that are getting fixed up around there, a dog park and you are close to Surrey's and Blue Plate Cafe, which are great breakfast/lunch options...the former has a juice bar that is great. You will continue down Camp and hit the Warehouse District.
Another cool drive is up Esplanade to City Park...take a left on Carrolton/Wisnor and head to Mid City...Angelo Brocato's for gelato...if you are around that area I would suggest either driving around Metairie Cemetary (which is ridiculously beautiful) or touring Longue Vue House and Gardens.
I am just suggesting driving since I know it will be hot.

Don't forget to check out
Juans Flying Burrito
If you got a wild pack of hungry teenage boys, this should certainly be a stop.
If you don't mind me asking, why is the Krewe of Monroe coming to the big-easy?

I just typed this in another thread about magazine St....this may be of some help for you:
quote:
There are several main area...I just did this a year ago with the gf when she moved here. She had been to NOLA a dozen times, but never went down Magazine (my favorite street in NOLA).
It is best to park and walk, then drive to the next area and park/walk there. I would start on the downtown end and work your way to the zoo/Riverbend...
I would start at Surrey's and get breakfast and fresh squeezed juices...it's in the Lower Garden District. You have to drive to the first shopping area:
The first area, which spans for a couple of blocks on the downtown side of the Jackson/Magazine intersection. They have some funky shops, art galleries, a bunch of antique shops, Juans Flying Burrito, and Aidan Gill (an old time barbershop that sells high end gentleman items...its worth stepping into just for the smell of an old Barbershop).
The second area spans from Washington to Louisiana Ave on Magazine...this is probably the largest and busiest area. The Bulldog is there for a beer for you while she shops, there are about 10 women's dress shops, Joey K's, Gott Gourmet is a good spot and Sucre is great for desserts of all kinds (she will love this place). From here you have to get in your car and drive again to the Napoleon/Magazine area...Lillette is a great lunch option on the way.
Napoleon/Magazine area has a couple of women's stores and a shoe place that the gf loves (don't know the name)...you can grab a drink at Ignatius or if you really want to hang with the locals go to Ms. Mae's The Club ($1 drinks, 24 hours). Le Petit Grocery is an excellent lunch option in this area (nicer)...Ignatius is pretty good for more casual.
If you cross Napoleon, there is an excellent French bakery, La Boulangerie, and a candy store, Luck You that is cool for bringing presents home to the kids (she imports all kind of European candies).
Next area you have to drive to as well...Jefferson/Magazine...the first CC's is on the corner...Whole Foods is there if you need AC...St. Joe's for a blueberry mojito (opens at 4pm)...there are about 8-10 women's stores here and some modern furnishing type places and jean therapy (which I know women and metrosexuals love).
The last area is by Perlis near Henry Clay...Palm Patch and Perlis are two of her favorites for Lily (some expensive arse flowery dress thing), etc. Don't worry Monkey Hill is across the street and stocked with beer.
Afterwards casual dinner: Franky and Johnnny's
Afterwards dressier dinner: Clancy's or Patois
Afterwards Happy Hour and live jazz: the porch at the Columns Hotel Bar (trust me on this one).
I hope this helps...hit me up if you have any questions.

quote:We skipped the family beach trip this year and decided to hit a few resturants in NO that we hadn't been to before instead. If we'd gone to the beach, it'd have been primarily to hit a few of our favorite places around Destin anyway. We're all pasy , white Scottsmen anyway...4 hours of sand in a week is enough for me. We figured we'd eat better in NO and it's closer...a no brainer.

quote:Thanks, and I'd love it...but...on this trip, these kids think I'm punishing them if they don't get to pick top shelf entree's from a place run by Emeril, Paul P. or the likes of them. We'll be in Horinoya fro a late lunch Friday, and I shudder to think of the size of that bill...they'll eat a few fish worth of sashimi and nigiri, and wouldn't be surprised if a waitress loses a finger or two. It'll get ugly. My Visa card issuer will call by Sunday to see if my damn card was stolen.

Definitely check out the Insectarium as well. I'm pretty sure they have discounted deals if you buy a ticket to both the aquarium and insectarium.
