So that's apparently the Atchafalaya River right there in the back ground...

Hmmm. I guess it could. But all that fresh, uncompacted dirt will just erode if it is in water for very long.
I guess if I had that camp and a doze, well, hell, I would do that same thing.

I'm thinking the velocity of the water is gonna be the problem here.
That's a beautiful place. Would hate to see it go.

The flow of the water will erode most all of that away within a short period of time let alone the seepage. That is the incorrect type of protection.
The water will be high for over a month, and the River hasn't even crested yet. HESCO baskets and SuperSacks of sand should have been used here. However, I have no idea where this is and therefore can't tell you how high the barrier needs to be anyhow. Logically speaking, if that is the Basin river in the background, and Morganza hasn't been opened up yet, you may see water 2 times the height of that berm that was built there. I am assuming they know the expected Inundation here thus that height.
From an Engineering perspective, I don't think it will last the duration of the flood fight as we go into June.

go to the ot and check out the video of the arkansas guy who saved his house doing sort of the same thing. Built a moat. House looks fine.

Dude would have been better off using his money as a downpayment on his next place rather than wasting it on that dozer work.

No disrespect to the Arkansas guy but if that is the Atchafalaya he doesn't have a shot with the levee.

I hope it does for their sake. That is a nice place and it is shame that it will probably be destroyed.

Pretty sure that is Maxim Doucet who owns a construction company or something.

Correct, I read about it in an article. He was moving 1000 yards a day to build his levee.

If that is Butte la Rose, then it is on a side channel of the Atchafalaya. Still bad, still probably a pointless exercise, but I don't think it will get the full current of the big river.

If it doesn't get the full current it may hold.........he will have to baby it but he might have a shot.

you gonna get a snake in your pool.

Yep. If he makes it work, he will get all the contract work he can handle from the Corps and the Levee Boards!

He needs to cover/protect that dirt to keep it from washing.

I'd imagine he wil cover it with some type of plastic sheeting with sand bags on top in order to hold it in place. Erosion wouldn't be as much of an issue if he does this.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. Lay a bunch of visqueen over it and erosion won't be an issue.

Anybody got an update on old Doucet?
Posted on 5/18/11 at 9:57 pm to MightierThePenIs
Yeah, the corps made him tear it down. He owns the heavy machinery, but was pillaging the dirt... Oh well, good try
