Damn. If so, how fricked is Vidalia?
Vidalia can kiss the new multimillion dollar riverfront facilities goodbye. They are moving in some temporary floodwalls right now.

According to the Natchez paper they are actively sandbagging at Vidalia. The article mentioned that at 60 feet they expected the river to be flowing at least 2,100,000 cfs. One would think that at 65' this could get interesting.

How stupid were they to build that shite outside the levee anyway? Geez...when I was a kid I saw water over that area several times. Humans are so arrogant sometimes.

Waste of money and time, IMHO. But I guess they have to try.

Vidalia Flood Wall
Here is an article from yesterday showing the "flood wall" Vidalia is constructing. I guess attempting to do something makes people feel better than doing nothing. This looks like a total waste of time if the river gets as high as forecast.

Kind of like a cardboard box on a railroad track. At least the local lumber mills probably had some brisk business.

Obviously you missed the part where they said they were gonna put some visquene over it.

Will some sand bags and visqueen hold?
I really don't care too much about the riverwalk, I just don't want to see the house I grew up in being carried into the gulf

A friend of mine in Vidalia just text me that he was hearing 67' now. Another friend is at a parish meeting, he said he would let me know what he finds out.

Same here, When they started building the riverfront I was thinking "why the hell are they building there?"

I have a question. This is a quote I read in an article from the N.Y. Times:
If a person buys farmland in a "floodway" or builds a house in a "floodway," does he have a right to complain when the "floodway" is flooded to save a town or other property that is not in a "floodway"? Am I offbase here?
quote:
General Walsh said he had sympathy for the farmers. “Many of the people who have lived in the floodway, I’ve known them for two or three years,” he said. “I know what this is going to do, if we open the floodway.”

IMO No, but it went to court in Missouri

If you're buying land to farm, then I would say it's at your own risk. But, why in the world would they allow someone to build a house in the floodway? That makes no sense.
