I apologize if this has already been asked but I listened to the press conference earlier and a question came to mind. The Engineer with the Corp that talked said that according to the NWS estimates of flow they would only need to open 25% of the Morganza spillway. The inundation map assumed it would be opened to 50%. I didn't catch where anyone asked him what affect would opening it at 25% rather than 50%. Would the estimates drastically change and the water be 1/2 of what they estimated? I don't pretend to know the effect of this so please bare with me if it's a stupid question. Thanks in advance!!

Good question imo.

I think it means less water.

I also found it funny that Jindal missed some critical things by DOUBLING the numbers. 1/ He said there would initially be TWO bays opened then 2/ Said 50% but it's 25%.

Go figure.

I thought of another angle. Would it mean that the depths would be the same but it would take longer to get to them? Or would the water be able to get out so that the water would never get to those heights?

it will take longer to get to destination and will give it more time to get out through the basin.Better news for those worried about back water. No change for those in morganza spillway

i would figure the depth would be far less b/c there's half the water flow. i also imagine this would slow down the flow of the water as there would be far less pressure forcing the water along the basin.

and also i think the outlying areas from the basin are at a lesser risk b/c the flooding shouldn't be as severe. less water will be easier to drain
