Gov Speaking...

Typing as he talks...
Corps is predicting the RR trigger to hit Saturday or Sunday. Gov asking for AT LEAST 3 days warning to get people out (would like 4 or 5).
Coast Guard will allow navigation until the water gets 2-3 from levee tops.
Went to Krotz Springs, mayor requesting help to build levees to protect homes and the refinery. Gov has Natl Guard out there helping. Gonna be working 24/hrs a day - should protect Util substation, 240 homes, and the refinery
Went to Morgan City, they are building 10k ft fortifications (Guard is doing 24hr work there as well). Need help fortifying levee to keep the lake at bay. They feel confident they will be okay from backwater flooding from the lake. Projecting water will be ~6 feet.
Opening spillway, water would first arrive in Krotz Springs after 1 day, 3 days to MC.
Using 4 barges to help Bayou Chene (sp?) along with rocks and such.
Gov is not waiting for Emergency Declaration from Washington, all agencies are moving now instead.
North La. - fighting dozens of sand boils.
Not waiting on decisions from ACOE, telling Spillway region families to prepare for the worst.
Has already set up first aid/emergency shelters in Alex and Bastrop (possibly others, damn his rapid-fire speaking)
Already got a letter from the Corps that many of the lands around the spillway would flood even if MC remained close (for insurance purposes).
Natl Guard will there to help get people out then stay to police then do search & rescue
Start thinking now about where you would evac to, get your stuff together just in case.
...and that's where 98.1 cut him off and went back to music.

No, they will open it when the trigger hits. The Gov is just wanting to make sure he has the best idea of when that will be.
At least that's my take.

Why the hell doesn't Washington just go ahead and declare it a disaster area. Also if the trigger hits saturday and they wait another three to four days to open it sure seems like the water will be damn near over the spillway by then.

If I remember correctly, he said he's requested 22 parishes be designated as disaster areas.

he wants them to wait 2-3 days and they may try to do that, but not if the levels raise too much
we all know that the River is the boss and is calling the shots now

That makes more sense...It's not like there hasn't been ample warning already. But if they did wait 3-4 days, it would probably be too late.

I think anyone in that area should have known to get out by now.

But I am sure that there are plenty banking on that three day window once the official word is given.

No shite. My arse and my shite would already be headed to Alexandria, Monroe, Sherveport, Jackson, or ANYWHERE that wasn't in the path.

I'll get blasted perhaps but how about this? Obama didn't carry Louisiana ... he hates us. Same with the drilling crap.
Sorry, I'm just anxious about this.

You won't get blasted from me. I see no reason to not declare it.

Bingo....Texas Gov. Rick Perry asked for a disaster declaration for the wildfires and was denied....Wonder Why?

There is no reason to delcare a federal emergency just yet. Its not because Obama hates Louisiana

LOL...yeah.
By the same token..Bush carried Louisiana and fricked us then...so I am not sure your logic is sound. ALSO, not looking to turn this into something political, just refuting your point.

Same with Texas burning to the ground...

Not at this stage. At this stage Bush was urging Blanco to declare a State of Emergency but she was hesitating because of the authority it grants the federal government.

I'm with you on that.
I think there was a several-week long time lag with Missouri requesting disaster declaration for the tornadoes and the actual declaration. I believe it was finally declared several days after the levee was blown up there. (And yes, I do know they were supposed to blow up the levee as part of dealing with the flood - I'm not THAT paranoid...yet).
I'm a bit nervous, too. 1927 flood hit parts of Lafayette as well, according to the maps. I'm pretty sure Lafayette will be fine, but it's a bit too close for comfort in terms of ORCS and the pressures those 2 structures will be under.
