I figured it out. I was having a hard time figuring out how to add a player, but I got it.

b/c now that the season has begun, we add players according to waiver order. I'm not sure what the order is yet, but it resets the order each week inversely to our records (so the 7 teams that are 0-1 will all get priority over the 7 teams that are now 1-0).
The waiver period is 2 days - between now and then, you can add whomever you want, but all moves are pending until the waiver period is over. If any 2 teams selects the same player, then the team with waiver priority will get him. That's why your moves are pending - if any of us week 1 losers try to add the same player that you did, then we will get him ahead of you.
After Thursday, the waiver period will be over, and it will be first-come, first-serve for the rest of the week - then this whole process will start over next Tuesday morning.
*ETA - also, once the team with priority (waiver order #1) gets his first player (which he will by default), then he moves to the back of the line for his next player - so waiver priority doesn't guarantee you get EVERY player you want.
And obviously, if you've chosen to add a player that none of the other 13 teams added during the waiver period, you will get that player.
