The Contra Costa Times have learned that the A's are trying to trade Kevin Kouzmanoff -- and potentially a pitcher -- for the Mariners' Chone Figgins.
Oakland has been searching for a third base upgrade this off-season, but to no avail. Their recent bullpen acquisitions suggest the A's are making a serious push to unseat the Rangers in the AL West. Acquiring Figgins, despite coming off arguably his worst statistical season, would be an instant upgrade. Meanwhile, the Mariners would get a little younger and would shed the final three years and $26 million of his contract.

When I find that a-hole, burning will be the least of his worries.

Rouge, don't think I can do that one. Not a bad offer in the regular season, but with keepers coming up I'd rather hang on to Morneau. I'm trying to build my offense around Morneau and Pedro.

Tommy Hanson gained 10 pounds of muscle this offseason.
Hanson worked out at the Boras Sports Training Institute all winter with a team of trainers. "I felt like I did everything possible to get ready for the season," he said Monday. "That gives me maybe a mental edge." The 24-year-old finished with a cool 3.33 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 34 starts last season for the Braves. He struck out 173 batters in 202 2/3 innings.

V-Mart to start in No. 5 spot
Victor Martinez, C DET
News: The Sports Xchange reports Tigers DH/C Victor Martinez initially will bat fifth in manager Jim Leyland's lineup. "I think we will be very interesting," Martinez said. "It will be very tough for the (opposition). I feel like a little kid with a new toy." RF Magglio Ordonez will hit in front of cleanup batter 1B Miguel Cabrera. "He's versatile, and he's a proven run producer," GM Dave Dombrowski said of Martinez during Detroit's winter press tour. "He gives us three guys in the middle of the lineup who can drive in 100 runs. He makes the lineup very strong." "I just want to win," Martinez said. "I came here to win a World Series, and anything I can do to get this team better, I'm willing to do it," he said. "If they want me to DH, I will be the DH. If they want me to be behind the plate, I will be behind the plate. I'm just hungry to win."

Mike Trout OF | # 90 | Los Angeles
quote:
Trout was no doubt a prospect entering 2010, but few people expected the 25th overall pick in the 2009 draft to make the kind of impression he did. He had stretches where he looked like the best player in the minor leagues, and if he could have advanced past Class A last year, we might be talking about a midseason promotion for him now. His natural feel for hitting should accelerate his timetable for reaching the big leagues. He's a legitimate five-tool player -- six if you count his plate discipline -- and as close as a player in the low minors can get to can't-miss status. Considering the Angels have two starting outfielders in their mid-30s (Bobby Abreu and Torii Hunter), a 2011 debut isn't out of the question for Trout, but a September call-up is the more reasonable expectation, giving him a chance to turn 20 first. He's a must-own in long-term keeper leagues and is worthy of stashing in AL-only formats.
