Edinson Volquez had another mixed day on Friday, allowing 13 baserunners and three runs in five innings of work against the Padres.
He gave up nine hits while walking four and striking out three. He surrendered a two-run homer to Ryan Ludwick in the fifth inning. The hard-throwing righty now owns an 8.38 ERA through 9 2/3 spring innings, and isn't doing a very good job of allaying fears that he's not the same pitcher he was before his tumultuous past two seasons. He remains Cincinnati's de facto ace, but needs to show something in April and May to keep that title.

Washington SP Jordan Zimmermann hurled five strong innings and allowed no runs on five hits in the Nationals' 5-2 Grapefruit League victory over Detroit on Thursday night. Zimmermann struck out six and issued only one walk as he topped five innings for the second time this spring. The hard-throwing right-hander lowered his earned-run average to 2.70 with the outing. "It took him 90 pitches, but that's because he's one of those guys who throws so well that guys are going to be fouling balls off and the count gets up there," Washington manager Jim Riggleman told MLB.com. "He's making progress."
