I work at church. It comes down to these three things...
1. Hillary went to the far left on abortion and Trump made a case against abortion. It is still a very important issue for Christians.
2. I think there was an understatement of how Christians developed a fear that their religious liberties have been threatened under Obama.
3. Christians didn't take kindly to men in robes redefining what they feel God defined long ago.
Whether you agree with these things are not it is what kept the Evangelicals from abandoning Trump. They very reluctantly voted for him, but they voted for him none the less.

That's another bright point of the election, and it shows that most evangelicals are hypocrites. I honestly don't see faith bullshite coming back into the election process.
