First, the fear mongering on both sides is pathetic. I despise it now that it's become apparent that it's the method chosen to recruit voters to get elected. Both sides are guilty even though I feel that one side does it more. There's no justifying it either way.

I have a female family member that called another female family member regarding being fearful for our gay female family member.

What was the fear? The fearful one was literally concerned that gays were going to be taken to camps to have the gayness removed.

At first I laughed and thought to tell them all to shut up and toughen up. Instead, I decided to walk through the logic of why that fear was irrational.

The youth of our country are being fed the lie that Rs are evil. I asked her if she thought I supported camps for gays and obviously she said, no. I said do you think anyone that does support such a camp is sane. She said no. I had to explain that a few crazies an entire political party does not make.

I even had to explain that if Trump decided that he wanted to Nuke Chile for fun that it wasn't possible.

The media is to blame for this irrational fear and again, both sides are guilty. No one is coming for our guns and no one is putting gays in camps.

We must push back on the media at every turn because they are profiting on fear mongering and are complicit in dividing this country into slivers so that political elites can get elected. It's pathetic and unpatriotic.

TL/DR: Media sells fear for profit and we need to confront them about it.

Boycott them and the companies who advertise with them.

This cannot be allowed to continue. I am not sure what tools are available to quash it, but much like the BLM rioting the media is fueling this.

While I agree, it is also "our" fault for being so insular.

Many people live in an echo chamber of their own "thought" kind.

I am so happy that I was encouraged to not just 'accept' different views but to SEEK them out. I purposely befriend people with different positions and invite them to dinners, etc. It is why my best friends simply happen to be gay. I put myself in positions to interact with them and learned that they are the best people I know.

Therefore, when I hear "gay people want to steal our children and rape them into gayness"...I know the ridiculousness of it because I interact in the "group"

My dad made it a PURPOSE to introduce me to successful "white folk" so that I KNEW they did not want to keep a foot on my neck. They welcomed my curiosity and ENCOURAGED me to succeed. He told me that he wasn't eloquent enough to explain it to me. I needed to experience it and to go outside of my "comfort zone" to learn about others.

Tell your family member to go out of her way to interact with Republicans / conservatives and she will quickly learn they are just folks.

True there is always fear mongering on both sides. But the "democrats are coming for your guns" thing is mostly true. They attempt gun restrictions every time they are in power.
