If he had anything to do with the Kirk Cousins contract I would be pissed as a Broncos fan

The Cousins contract extension and the Vikings salary cap situation can’t be blamed on Paton. That’s more of a GM and ownership decision.

His background is in scouting. He’s built his reputation as both a talent evaluator, and his process of scouting future opponents.

The Vkings have been consistently one of the best drafting teams in the NFL over the last decade. Their problem has been finding a long term solution at QB.

He’s worked alongside Vikings GM Rick Spielman for most of his career, and has been a hot name as a GM candidate for several years. The rumors were he was happy in Minnesota, loyal to Spielman, and was waiting on the best opportunity.

For example, the Jets have been interested in hiring Paton for a long time, but he’s turned down interview requests from them on 3 different occasions. He was close to accepting a job as Browns GM last year, but supposedly his concerns over Haslam’s ownership scared him away.

Paton and Will McClay are enigmas in NFL front office circles. Both are highly coveted candidates for GM positions, but they rarely even accept interview requests. The Broncos made a great hire. His success may be dependent on Elway’s role going forward and their relationship.

This is a far more in-depth response on a random front office guy than I ever expected to find on this site.

As long as the Raiders don’t hire Erwin Romel the Broncos May be able to build the roster to challenge the chiefs in that division.

A few years ago it was a highly coveted job. But with the disaster that is the ownership situation right now, I'm shocked he took the gig.
