Wanting to try a keys trip but from everything I read and hear they don’t have the best beaches or the places aren’t on the beach. Are there any exceptions? And if not is there somewhere within a fairly quick drive that has A good beachfront type set up?

Where are you driving in from?

Would be flying. I guess into Miami.

If you're flying into Miami, South Beach. Otherwise my favorite Florida beaches are on the gulf: Pensacola to Appalachia Bay and further south around Naples/Tampa/St. Petersburg.
Been a while since I've been to the keys, but the beaches of Key West weren't much. Key Largo wasn't bad and there was one of the small keys that had a nice beach (forget which one, but it wasn't developed).

Bahia Honda is good. Even better - take the ferry over to the Dry Tortugas. Beautiful water there, a couple of small beaches next to the fort that are nice, the snorkeling is very good.

We went to Key West in May of last year (2019) and stayed at the Sheraton Suites on the south side of the island, right across the street from one of the few beaches on the island (called Smathers Beach). Staying at the hotel also gave us free use of equipment from a little operation on the beach there called Sunset Watersports-- (kayaks, yolo boards). Aerial view of Sheraton and beach:
The biggest problem we had and is a common problem down in south Florida is the seaweed. It's not like the wispy little green stuff on the Florida Panhandle; it's this thick, reddish stuff (sargassum) that piles up on the beach and in the water along the shoreline, just like this.
Yucky. Worst of all, it rots and STINKS to high heaven. When we went, we had it on Key West AND on the Atlantic in Miami Beach.
Anyway, if the seaweed is not bad, I'd recommend the Sheraton Suites as a beach place, also there is the Casa Marina Key West with private beach frontage (but that is rather pricey as it is a Waldorf Astoria resort). The public beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park, on the far southwest end of the Key, is also real nice, with umbrellas, snack bar, and such.
