If you haven’t seen it, there’s a new show on FoodTV, where chefs buy shoppers groceries on the way out of the store and make what they can.

This one chef stopped a girl, asked how much her groceries were, and she said $47. He offered her $100 (or something) and she took it.
She had a half dozen soft shell crabs for $60. The show is either fake or the girl is an idiot.

Anyway, $10 a piece for soft shell crab?

Edit: I think that says 5 crabs, not 6, so that $12 a piece.

Actually, I think it was $11.99 a piece, now that I do the math.

Anyway, this was a good episode, other than it was a little unfair. One of the chefs was a Michelin Star rated chef. It was basically a NFL player vs three high school all stars.

You can get a lot of food in a Louisiana Winn-Dixie in exchange for a box of behind the counter allergy medicine

Where was the store? In Delcambre, that's absurd, but 2000 miles away from where the blue crab lives, I can believe it.

Well blue crabs are Atlantic and gulf so yeah, they'll be more expensive in California since you have to transport them across the country.

Fake?

The show sounds "fun to watch" but let me tell you a little secret. None of these shows are real. The term of art in Hollywood is "scripted reality" which is a nice way of saying a fake show made to look "real."

Think about it for a minute, how would the show go if he bought the groceries and it was three loaves of bread, a six pack of beer and some other BS that couldn't possibly be combined? (I know someone is going to throw in a beer and bread recipe but you get my point.)

The show was so fake and awkward when they would approach "strangers" to buy their groceries that I turned it off after about 10 minutes.

To play devil's advocate here, you could just wait for the people with full shopping carts or just not use the bad carts. With a few grand budgeted, you can buy a lot of grocery carts.

That said, I'm totally with you. Scripted. If they want to maintain a modicum of integrity so the chefs don't know exactly what they're dealing with (HA!) they could just send a production assistant in with $200 and tell them what they buy is up to them, but they are to buy everything they'd need to cook a meal.

The show is not bad, other than the host (she’s boring as Hell). They only get $500 to shop and that’s for all three rounds.
Last night, I just saw that flaw were the girl coming out of the store, and said she spent $47, but the crabs were $60. Did she have a brain fart?
They had to make a surf and turf, and one of the chefs didn’t get any kind of seafood (eventually getting her eliminated).
It could be a great show, but needs tweaking.
