Yes, but it's a terrible redemption. 3 Marriott points equals 1 Starwood point. The transfer also takes a minimum of five business days.
Disagree with you here. There are a lot of times this makes a lot of sense. Plus the transfer is instant. In 2017 I used a total of 155K SPG converted to Marriott on two different trips.

With AirBnB and the internet, a nice trip can be very inexpensive with some planning. My trip to New Mexico last summer, it was under $500 for a week, including the rental car.

The key imo if you aren't loaded is off peak travel times and finding deals. Also as said, making travel a priority over other luxury items like nicer cars, eating out more often, etc.
You can save 50% on a vacation very easily by traveling 2-3 weeks before or after peak times.
Personally I just use cash back CC's and pay off my bills. I spend my time concentrating on finding deals elsewhere.
I enjoy Vrbo's and Airbnb's a lot also, and I rarely stay in a hotel room as a luxury it's usually just a place I sleep. I do pay for location though.
There's flights to Europe, Asia, etc. for under $600/ person. Not often and not every where, but with $500 flights and cheap hotels you can travel on almost any budget.
