I figured I would get better responses here. Looking to take a family vacation to the hill country next summer. Needs to be driving distance to Austin and San Antonio. Would like to be on or close to a lake. Kids age 2, 8, and 10. Looking like Canyon Lake is the best option but options are wide open. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I was there this past summer. Lake Travis and Six Flags San Antonio were both good options. You need to rent a ski boat at Lake Travis at least a month in advance in the summer.
Also, it was literally 100 degrees. We camped some and it was rough. I couldn't get to sleep until about midnight. Water is important.

I live in the area but have never stayed in Canyon Lake. Horseshoe Bay Resort would be my recommendation.

Try Inks Lake in Burnet County near Lake Buchanan. Beautiful State park location w/ campsites and cabins. The deer are so tame they'll eat out of your hand

Canyon lake is nice. You could rent a pontoon boat and take your family out for 4 hours.
We just found a vrbo house, if going during the summer, get a house with a pool.
