OT Air Conditioning Experts: Suggestions?

Looking for some suggestions. Periodically my condensing unit outside will start but the blower won't turn on. Without air moving, the house won't cool, and the condenser will continue to run unless I turn the thermostat to off. A few minute wait after flipping the circuit breaker off and on and resetting the thermostat and everything is fine again. Sometimes it happens as often as 24 hours apart, sometimes a number of days. At times when the air won't blow, I can flip the thermostat to heat and it'll blow immediately, no reset of anything required. The only thing I knew to look for was if the pan was full, but it's bone dry. Anyone have this issue before?
Update: Changed the thermostat out last Monday, worked fine until Saturday, and now the fan never powers on. AC guy came out, said capacitor is fine, looks like I need a replacement circuit board. Got back to me today with a cost of $600+. Is this something that is out of the realm of google and youtube to replace myself or what?

Isn't the capacitor on the condensing unit outside? It starts up fine every time, and continues to run even if the air doesn't blow.

Sounds like a bad timer in the evaporator unit

Tstat or indoor fan relay. Tstat may not be calling for fan to come on or fan relay isn't closing.

Since the fan comes on with the heat (I'm assuming every time), I'd vote for the thermostat too. It's easy to change out, just use a new battery.

Sorry, I misread, I thought you were saying the cooling fan on the compressor wasn't coming on:

Contacts are sticking on outside unit, the arc every time the unit comes on and are made of brass they get pits in them causing it to stick, get someone to check that out first.

Relay on control board is sticking. New control board should take about 30 min to install. Call a technician.

quote:correct. Some call it a fan timer relay. Some call it a fan sequencer, etc. etc. etc.

Either way the blower in the evaporator is not coming on when commanded to do so at times. The outside condensing unit is working just fine. No capacitor, contactor issues.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions everyone. I might try a new programmable thermostat first, it'll be an upgrade over our current one anyway. Otherwise it looks like I'll be calling in a pro.

Most AC computer boards, capacitors, and thermostats are incredibly easy to fix. They are basically just unplug and plug, and super easy to find. You should change your capicitor also if you do any work on it and it's 5+ years old, those are some of the most common things to go out and a technician tried to charge me $225 to replace the $20 part in 10 minutes when I was out of town.
The 3 parts listed in this thread are all $100 combined and less than 30 minutes of work with Google as your only experience, id change all those before calling someone.

He didn't just charge 225 for a cap, he charged you for a truck full of tools and parts to show up in your driveway with an insured and trained individual to test and ensure all you needed was a cap. You should have changed that before you called.

Does your current thermostat take batteries. Mine did the same as yours one year when I forgot to change the batteries.
Now that I installed the Ecobee, it gets power from the unit so no more batteries
