I have never flown spirit before… How do they know/confirm/verify whether or not you have paid for a carry on bag as you are boarding?

By boarding group. Carry-ons go in the first two groups.

Make sure to wrap your hands before you get to the gate and keep that chin down!

I can chime in here because I just flew them back from L.A., twice, because we stopped in Vegas for a few days because we couldn't get to MSY. If you show them your bag at the check in counter they will be strict about telling you you need to pay for carryons , but they do very little checking when you board the plane. If you just walk on the plane with a reasonable carryon, they will not bother you. We had one large suitcase and two carryons. We checked the big one. It was stuffed with wine bottles and was way overweight, so we checked a carryon and took the other one on for free.

Very interesting....I figured that it was a combination of boarding priority and/or some verification on your boarding pass. But also thought that there was a high probability that passengers jut "go on" with carryons without a pre-paid purchase.

Any other experiences similar to @geauxpurple?

Exactly what he said. They are strict at the counter, but not strict when boarding. I always fly with a decent size swissgear backpack and they count that as a "personal item". I don't mind spirit if it is a short weekend trip where I can pack light. Most of the other airlines (like American and united) have lowered their standards so much that it feels about the same as flying spirit.
