I’ve often heard in-state kids face pretty significant pressure to stay home to play for the state university (Louisiana kids —> LSU, for example). I would imagine such pressure is ratcheted up for kids from the same city where state university is located (i.e., Baton Rouge prospects).

I was never recruited out of high school nor friends with anyone who was, so I’m just curious about:

> where does most of that pressure originate (family & friends of a recruit, etc)??

> is it extremely common for recruits to end up selecting the home school Primarily to avoid feeling like they let those around them down?

All of the above. When your entire family and all your friends are die-hard fans of a particular team, and you are supposed to be the "chosen one" who has been put on this earth to go be a star for that team when the time comes, kids will certainly feel that pressure--even if there's not necessarily anyone actively saying to them "you better go to X school!". It's just a general atmosphere--imagine if you knew that everyone in your life was not just paying close attention to a big decision that you had coming up, but was actively rooting for a particular outcome--that shite would weigh on anyone.

Probably not *consciously*, but I guarantee that it plays a big factor.

Yeah, Acquatic, I don’t envy being faced with having to make such a big arse decision at such a young age. Particularly, as you said, with everyone you know watching and reacting to it.

That’s not an easy predicament to be in, particularly when you aren’t even an adult yet

I wasn’t recruited either but have been around a few 4 & 5 star guys that committed to us and elsewhere. The pressure I saw came from almost everywhere. Imagine being 17-18-19 years old and being asked “where are you gonna play?” about 300 times a year. Family and friends typically want to be “in the know” so they tend to overstep some boundaries but I’ve seen texts/tweets/etc from total strangers that would (at least SHOULD) leave most adults completely embarrassed by what they say to recruits that commit elsewhere.

Great topic ... I can only speak from my brother's experience, albeit he was recruited in the late 80's; 30+ years ago. There was no Rivals, 247, ESPN recruiting, or social media internet. Summer football camps were in their infancy. Player profiles and information was mainly learned and shared thru Max Emfinger who helped kids get noticed by D1 schools. My brother was 1st team all-district & offensive MVP of the NOLA Catholic league. LSU never recruited my brother because they were content with signing Jesse Daigle whose father was an LSU coach at the time. My brother committed to play for HC Pat Jones @ Oklahoma State and compete against QB Mike Gundy for playing time.

I do not recall any pressure being placed on my brother by his friends, HS, local media (Hap Glaudi & Ron Swoboda ) , or my parents. My brother just wanted to go somewhere and play while earning his college degree. Today, recruiting and college sports is a whole different animal as evident by this and many other www forums. I believe kids today are softer than several decades ago, and it's an "ALL ABOUT ME" world.

Another thing to consider, many lower income kids who come from broken homes have handlers that will steer them towards a certain coach or University. A kid's dream may be to play for school A, but ends up at school B because of poor guidance or bad information.

Depends who the kid is. You guys should read the book the "Courting of Marcus Dupree". Its a book from the late 80's and is what led me to want to eventually work in the world of college football recruiting. The pressure on a kid like him was insane, but not so much for others.

I used to do a tv show and have spent a lot of time with elite recruits and their families and asked every one of them this very question. Kids like Tre White and O.J. Howard never felt any pressure while a Rueben Foster or Frank Herron did. So much depends on their family and high school coach. Also depends when you commit and if you are a kid who flip flops.

Yeah, belowmebama, The cringe worthy post to recruit social media accounts should somehow be used against the people that post them. That shite is just so wrong and pathetic on many levels

Great info, Blaze, thanks for sharing buddy.

Interesting point you bring up about handler’s for these 1718 year old athletes. That whole arrangement has always kind of struck me the wrong way and I feel bad for kids having to rely on those types instead of their parents or other loved ones that really do genuinely care for their best interest

Hey BayouCatFan, Thanks for the book recommendation.

Question- is it better than, worse than, or about the same as that ESPN 30 for 30 on Marcus Dupree?

Very familiar with the recruiting of MD as he’s a few years older than me. What made his recruiting so crazy is that he was the #1 HS player in the country who was 6’3”, 220 pounds, and ran a 4.25 40-yard dash. Additionally, it was the wild wild West in the SWC & Big 8 conference and there was crazy money being spent to recruit players while guaranteeing their families $250K ~ $500K. Philadelphia, Mississippi have a population of approximately 6,000 people during this time. As an 18-yr old kid, Dupree was fixing to get paid more money than anyone in the entire town.

Why single out Louisiana when this goes on everywhere from Alabama to Washington.

Much of it comes from the idiots who interpret every little nuance of what a recruit does or says. Most of the time its when they assume their favored recruit is going elsewhere. Typical example is the panic by some on this board after interpreting Quency Wiggins' purported demeanor in a damn radio interview. They also cluck over where a recruit visits, how he looks in a photo, what he says upon returning from a visit, color of socks, and on and on.

Had a friend recruited by State and LSU in baseball. His dad was a huge Ron Polk and state fan. His family all state fans. I would talk about LSU and you could see in his eyes no matter what he was going to state even when LSU was winning titles. He was a good player did well when he played but he and Polk didn’t like each other but that’s where his dad always wanted him to go.

There is a strong “ if you aren’t a Tiger you are Tiger Bait” attitude. There aren’t many programs that can compete with what LSU offers a player, so it’s not like fans are completely off base. So I think way more than most places, if you go elsewhere, LSU fans want you to stay there. It’s just regional and Institutional pride. So if a kid goes elsewhere, many people will kind of unofficially disavow him and consider him as outside the tribe. Not condoning, just saying.
