Looking to buy an under-cabinet icemaker for our kitchen since we use a lot of ice and our ice maker in our fridge is hit or miss and runs out fast. I am somewhat set on getting a Kitchen Aid (15") since it would match all of our other appliances.

Are there any major downsides anyone has had experience with that I may be overlooking?

Outside of having to gut and lose storage space of a cabinet- I can't think of many...

TIA

I was 100% against it at first because of price but I won't go without one now.

They tend to need a good bit of servicing and can be energy hogs, but when they’re working they’re a really nice convenience.

I had an under cabinet but was always runnign out with fishing/hunting so I put a fridge in its place and have a full size Hoshizaki now in my garage and whish I woulda done it years before. Not that much extra cost wise and have 300# of ice per day at my disposal!

We have had ours for about 8 years and only had to have it serviced once. We got it from Appliance Distributors on Nicholson. They will service it if needed if you buy it from them. I clean it regularly about every 6 months. We really like it.

They seem to be hit or miss on if you get a good workhorse or a lemon. When I was about 10 we moved into an older house in my hometown and the first two things my dad did was install a garbage compactor and an under counter ice maker. It was a large galley style kitchen with commercial appliances. Previous owners had a catering business. The first ice maker had several problems. It would clog up and require it to be emptied out and cleared. Then the adjustable grid for cube size would get stuck. We couldn’t use it in the thin setting. After a few warranty repairs and servicing we ditched it and got a new one. It ran great for about 10 years until we moved out, and probably kept going for a while after that. Not a single issue.

On my old floor at work we had a similar one. Maintenance was in there about once a month it seemed and we’d be without ice for several days. Thankfully I could go to several other floors to get ice. Brought a cooler and filled it from another floor so everyone could have ice.

Not to scare you away from getting an under counter one but those are my experiences. Either great or a lot of work to keep operating. I’ve thought about getting one in my basement but whenever we have a party I just go buy about 20-40 lbs and keep a cooler stocked. Our Maytag has a small ice maker in the freezer drawer but it won’t keep up with several people making drinks.

If you want a clear ice one they don't actually refrigerate, they use a cold plate to create the ice and then the insulated ice bin allows it to slowly melt. Thus the clear ice. They work better with filtered water and that is essentially what cleaning them does, is it removes the mineral deposits.

As said they are hit and miss but are a nice convenience. I'm not really an ice snob so it doesn't make a difference to me if its clear ice or frozen ice.

You can get a stand alone ice maker like what's in a freezer for something like $500 also. Its a cheaper option.

ETA: Also clear ice requires a drain line. If you can put one in your garage or laundry where it doesn't have to look nice then you can save a good bit of coin and get one that's bigger.

My experience with a KitchenAid is that if you clean it as required and replace filters that are trouble free. Once you start using an ice maker, you’ll always have one.

My experience with them has been bad. Ours was always giving us fits. It also wasn't enough if you had a bigger get together
In the new house I spent a little extra and have a 350lb commercial ice machine. Much more reliable and plenty ice for parties, fishing and stuff like that.
