I have an outdoor staircase with iron railing leading to my screened in porch and I'm wanting to put a planter at the bottom/side of with vines growing out and eventually envelope the railing. Tough to explain, but it would look good.

Any tips on what vines to use? Would like evergreen, hearty, and fast growing...

I'm in zone 7 near Chattanooga. I'm planning on going to nursery, but would like to do some homework first if possible. Those old lesbians at our nursery upsell me at every turn I think

That's the best advice I could give in all honesty. Go to a nursery in your area and they should know what would work in your growing zone.

I used to think that about my local nursery. But I’ve learned that they know what the heck they’re talking about. I have stopped being a cheap arse and started listening to them.

Confederate jasmine (trachelospermum jasminoides) pc name is star jasmine.

Fig Vine (ficus pumila)

Virginia creeper (parthenocissus quinquefolia) - dies back in winter

Talk to the plant ladies...

Are you trying to do this for a full length staircase or just a few steps? If you have a full staircase, I'd suggest to not deal with the frustration and disappointment.

Confederate or Carolina jasmine might work.
Climbing ivy?
Mandevilla if you only have a couple of steps worth of railing and don't mind replacing it every year.

It's about 8 red brick steps with an iron railing. Not big, but not some two step thing.

I went down a rabbit hole last night about making my own concrete planter which seems pretty doable, so I might put that parallel to the stairs to grow vines out of.

That's manageable.
The jasmine route might be the way to go.
Homemade planter is probably a lot more affordable and will be a better fit too.

Carolina jasmine

Carolina Jessamine will attract bees when it's blooming.

I'd love this! We're very pro-bee

But I googled it and saw this:

Toxicity Note: Carolina Jessamine is highly toxic to humans, livestock, and pets, and should be planted with caution.

With a 3 and 5 year old that put everything in their mouths and 2 big dogs, I think this might be a deal breaker.

I think I'm going with Boston Ivy. It has that classic look I'm going for, does well in zone 7, and appears to be pretty easy to maintain.

Yea, it's a good Vine. It's the vine that grows on the outfield wall at Wrigley field and on the buildings at Harvard, hence The Ivey League, so it's plenty hardy. It does die back in the winter and you will have bare Vine until spring.

I read it will change colors here but not completely die out. Chattanooga doesn't quite have the winters of Chicago or Boston.

But I'll ask my nursery. Was hoping to get something that doesn't lose it's foliage ever.

It dies back here in Dallas and we are zone 8a. If you get below 32,it will die back.
