Looking at a new one and suddenly the hard drives are much smaller whereas a couple of years ago 1tb was the norm.

Due to the fact that cloud storage is bigger than ever and things are steaming

Overall public less the need to store all those pics and movies when a service/ storage and or a cloud pc can store them.

That and some models are opting for ssd and to keep price down, they are also keeping storage size lower

I store everything important on either a cloud service or external HD. Why would I need all that storage on a single device anymore that will eventually be replaced.

Pretty much all laptops have SSD drives now.

Because they're nvme drives, which are orders of magnitude faster than spinning disks. The trade off is that they're much more expensive. Even 1TB nvme drives are more affordable now than ever though.

I have a 2TB SSD on my new MBP. I wish I could have afforded the 8TB. 4K videos at 60FPS eats through massive amounts of storage.

Are you in the professional video editing business or something? I don’t think I’ll use 8 TB for the rest of my life.
