Coaching Prospect: Jay Larrañaga

Jay is the current lead assistant to Brad Stephens in Boston. I believe he spent one year under Doc, and was retained when Brad Stephens was hired. His father is Jim Larrañaga, the Miami hurricanes head coach for a number of years.
He was a HC in the GLeague for 2 years and his team made the postseason both years.
He played professionally overseas and spent a great deal of time in Italy leaning motion offense, aka D’Antoni offense. Apparently he is very adept at both offense and defense.
Stephens says of him that his player development is “off the charts”.
He spent an entire summer and then the better half of two years working with Marcus Smart. Smart credits him a great deal with his development as a player.
He had interviewed for a number of jobs. Stephens has said repeatedly that he believes Jay getting a HC is a matter of time.
Just thought I’d bring up a name not often discussed here.

Supposedly he’s great in interviews too so I’m surprised no one has hired him yet

Yeah this is from yesterday:

Texted someone in the league to give me a darkhorse candidate for an NBA job that doesnt get much buzz. He said he could see NOLA, Chicago or OKC being into Jay Larranaga or Jamahl Mosley. Two guys that apparently interview extremely well and are highly thought of around NBA

Ah well. A friends texted me yesterday asking my opinion on JL and I didn’t know much. So I looked him up.
My friend is on twitter so he probably saw McNamara and asked me about it. I quote him all the time on here and always give him credit. Honestly didn’t know this one.

Eh. It’s an entertaining board. If I had known I would have given him credit.
