Any of you all ever use a middle buster to cut a drainage ditch? Will be used in clay soil.

If so, what were your thoughts, tricks, cons?

You are going to have to come back down each side and sweep away the displaced soil, something like a tail blade...which ultimately might be better for cutting the ditch.

Even if you don't sweep the displaced soil out of the way, it may still help, if there are eyes for the water to drain through.

Do you have something to spread what you carve out?

If so, it will work fine.

My tip is with clay, set it light and do it 3 or 4 times just taking a couple inches at a time, rather than trying to take a large chunk in one pass. If you’re taking large chunks in clay it will want to peel up alligator tails if it’s wet, and if it’s dry, it’s going to want to buck or jump out of the trench when it hits the harder spots.

If it’s wet clay, you might have to make a couple passes and then give that subsoil a little time to bake and dry out.

You’ve got to finesse clay if you want a consistent drain. Those multiple passes will also help bust clods and make the spoil easier to spread.

You’re probably going to need a bigger tractor

Appreciate all the responses. I have a blade and a grater box. Not trying to go real deep, but mostly looking for a water to collect to. 6-8 inches would probably bee the deepest I'll take a ditch.

Really appreciate the replies.

Can you angle your hitch arm? I have a turnbuckle that will raise or lower my right side hitch arm. I've made ditches with my box blade by angling it. Just another option if you're not in a tight space.

One option If your only going 6-8 inches you may be better off just using your grader box. Put half the teeth in it and leave half out pull you a swale that way you can mow it and not have to deal with a “ditch”.

No. No angling mechanism. I wish there was... would've made cleaning out the "parish maintained" ditch a little easier.

I might try that as well. The clay out here makes the swale approach interesting. May end up discing first then use your approach.

Yeah if you have a disc set them suckers to really dig then pull the loose dirt and drag it where you want. Pulling disc and and then box blade is a lot easier and makes for a better product IMO than a middle buster.

your blade won't tilt and angle, baw? Otherwise carry on.

Keep passing over will dig it down.

Grader blade set at a 45 to pull the dirt out and clean it up is best.
