re: How would you feel if the wife came home one day with a new car?

If a new car is a large financial cost to you, then you probably don't understand why a couple wouldn't talk to each other when that level of money isn't a question.
My wife buys her car, I buy mine. We aren't getting lambos so it doesn't matter.
Lot of weak men here.
My wife and I make a lot of money. Far more than most of our colleagues from law school. $50,000 is a frick load of money, even for us. It's a decision that will impact everything we do that year, from how much we save to whether we vacation. Willy nilly buying an item that costs over $1000 after a very very brief discussion of "we need this," no details, no looking into the right purchase together, etc., would be frowned upon by both my wife and I. Now if she abdicates the purchase decision to me or vice versa, then so be it. But it's discussed, looked at with respect to future finances and plans, and mutually agreed upon.
So, call it being "weak" if you'd like. The vast majority of people can't just go buy a car, let alone a new one, let alone on what amounts to damn near a whim. What I have learned in this thread are two things: (1) People manage their wealth way fricking differently than me and (2) my wife and I function far more as partners in our decisions than many on here.
No right or wrong way, but neither is an indication of a "strong" or "weak" man. Take this weak troll and frick yourself with it.

Subtle brag is subtle.
Or congrats on the '92 Corolla

I would absolutely love it. I would pull up with a brand new 24' Yellowfin the next day.
We did (very very briefly) talk about me getting a boat.

but am I too old school to think I’d be pissed beyond belief in this scenario?
So what?
My wife came home with a new car one day.
No big deal. Her car. She can get what she wants.
I get what I want and don't care what she thinks about it ... because I'm old school.

It better be able to haul a decent sized boat, because that's what I would get the next day.

“Who is Will Cover?”
*SMACK*
In my head I hope I would be cool with it, but I know I would lose my shite on an impulse of this magnitude.
I don’t completely understand the idea of separate money in a marriage. Are we talking about a predetermined amount of discretionary spending? Is this in addition to car expense as in each person can spend $500/month on a car and anything above that amount is out of their discretionary bucket?
