I have used an Echo Weedeater for 15 years to edge my driveway and sidewalks but I finally bought a dedicated edger with a 4 cycle engine this summer. I have to say that using the edger is much easier than the weedeater and it looks much nicer. I did a good job with the weedeater but the edger gets a much deeper trench and the cut looks cleaner.

Something else not mentioned is the quality of the driveway/sidewalks. I've edged a few houses, with an edger, where the sloppy concrete pour would kick out the edger and ding the blade in the process.

If you can't edge better edges with a weedeater you're doing it wrong. I use cheap hundred dollar or less weedeaters and my edges look like they were done with a laserbeam.

To me! (For what that’s worth)! I think the edger cuts a cleaner line along the concrete.

I had an edger (McClane) for years, and it was significantly better, especially on concrete. That being said, I hardly used it, just to easy to keep using the weedeater. Also, not much difference along flowerbeds.
It was best if you wanted a narrow deep groove (like to bury a wire for a fido shock, or shock colar for a dog.)

I finally gave it away because I almost never used it.

If you have any kind of steeply sloped sidewalks or driveway, use the edger.
Over time, weed eater edging will develop water channels and your edge will become an eyesore.

Gas weedeater only. Use to have an edger, but they became impractical once weedeaters came into the mix.

Get it started with an edger. Maintain with trimmer. Touch up with edger if need be.
