Chimney Rock State Park is worth a visit. Awesome view from the top
And if you get a not so nice day or want a little more action, walking around eating and drinking in Asheville is always a good time.

The lake is beautiful. Definitely Chimney Rock. You’ll be 45 minutes from Asheville. For a less touristy town Hendersonville is nice. It’s 25 minutes away.

Chimney Rock
Lake James
Bald Mountain/Apple Valley if you play golf
As others have mentioned, Asheville is only 45 minutes away, but the road through Hickory Nut Gorge is windy AF!

The town of Black Mountain is about 40 minutes north of Lake Lure. I have not been, except to drive through it, but it has been recommended to me as a place to go.
I do know that there is a place called White Horse in BM that has a variety of musical entertainment performances. For example on 7/13 they have the Asheville Jazz Orchestra performing. You can google White Horse Black Mountain to find their web site.
