1974 Nolan Ryan, throwing an unbelievable 235 pitches, whiffs 19 batters in 13 innings, including Cecil Cooper six consecutive times, in the Angels' 4-3 victory over Boston in 15 innings in Anaheim. The right-hander's performance will be the first of three 19-strikeout outings the Texan throws this season.

The manager would be fired before he got back to the locker room if that happened in 2019.

Yep, crazy how the game has evolved.
I watched Chris Sale get pulled after the 7th inning after about 105 pitches with 17 strikeouts a few weeks ago. The bullpen promptly blew the game. He had a great opportunity to break the all time strikeout record of 20 if they left him in.

Also on this day, Roger McDowell spat on Kramer and Newman.

Simply a bona fide legend

This MFer should have been on the bench after the first 4 strikeouts. How the hell do you strike out 6 times in a game?! Especially against a guy that had to be gassed at the very end.

You mean he made it 3 times through the order? Hell, he probably went through 5 times.
The other part to that story is the opposing pitcher, Luis Tiant, went 14 1/3 innings, the entire game, and lost the game with one out in the 15th.
These batters back then valued not getting struck out, yet Ryan could mow through these guys throwing over 200 pitches in the process. It doesn't make any sense.
I think pitchers today are just conditioned differently. Starters in the past would pitch the entire game and they used 4 man rotations.

Today this is more common than it should be.

Nolan Ryan was a freak. His last pitch of his career was 98 mph I believe. he was also like 45 years old.
Also the fact that he had 3 19 strikeout games that season is the most absurd thing I got out of that.

Cecil Cooper
Guy was a damn good hitter. Hit .360ish the year Brett hit .390.

Nolan Ryan was the GOAT before it was even a term
