Standard procedure when no immediate plan to plead guilty. They could still be negotiating with the AUSA.

Yep - I was seated on a jury ready for the trial to start in Houston, and the defense atty informed the judge his client decided to plead guilty. Of course by that time, I don't think they had any bargaining chips left - the defense atty was obviously hoping for a more sympathetic jury selection.

For frick's sake, this is not state court where it can be a crapshoot under the right circumstances.
This is the goddamn feds and if they feel like they have your arse nailed to the wall, your arse is nailed to the wall.
There's a reason why their conviction rate is 95%+.
