I've always wanted one of these old rifles. To me, they are beautiful. Link with the story: LINK

Nice story.

I have an '03, bought it at a gunshow about 20 years ago. Paid $400 for it at the time, I was real hesitant about forking over that much money, but now glad I did.

Prices for '03s are almost insane now.

The same with the 1906 and 1917. Those are beautiful, too.

Why don’t the ‘17s get talked about more. I don’t know anything about them, except that our troops used far more of them during The Great War than the ‘03.

And now I'm down the rabbit hole of WW1 and 2 firearms. Again, for the hundredth time

Interesting

Although the Pedersen was rated for a time as the most likely candidate for standardization and adoption, the .30 caliber M1 Garand was chosen instead.[1]

Yep, I really like those, too. The SMLE is a great weapon with a storied history. Got 5 or 6 of them. Accurate, too. Very accurate. LINK

Picked one up from the CMP like 12 years ago before they ran out. Also visited the Springfield Armory a few years back. Really neat place if you happen to be in the neighborhood.

Is the 1917 Enfield the same as SMLE? I didn’t think it was. I’d love to have one of those SMLE with the rear aperture sight. It would seem the rimmed 303 would not feed well in a bolt action, but apparently it worked pretty damn good. Some say it was a better battle rifle than the Mauser 98.

You're right. They are not the same. Just saw Enfield and thought SMLE (Small Magazine Lee Enfield).

They are sweet.

Having handled and shot both of them, I think the SMLE was the better rifle. Much faster rate of fire than the Mauser 98, more accurate, and better sights, imho.

I have an 03 and an 03A3 purchased from the north Store/Armory in Port Clinton, Ohio. Made a run up there about 10-12 years ago with a friend on a 2 day up and back. Picked up a Eddystone Model 1917 as well. It was a great trip!

The 1917 is not easy to customize. The rabbit ears at the rear sight have to be machined off; the action cocks on closing the bolt instead of the Mauser lifting the bolt handle; and the magazine/trigger guard is not straight like the 03. And it’s heavy.
I have several rifles built on the 03 action and they’re the best ever made.

Well, you don't see them much in movies, but Lt. Neidermeyer and his squad used them in the parade scene in "Animal House"!

Take a look at the movie. They’re 17s.
