Some of the hot dog carts have little grills on them and the vendors cook beef and chicken kabobs on them. They then put those kabobs on a hot dog bun and put a sauce on it.

Has anyone else eaten this? I remember this being delicious and I would love to know what to call it when I tell friends going to NYC.

I don't know if they go on hot dog buns, but I think there are souvlaki carts up there. Those are like kabobs

had a bunch of these right across from yankee stadium last time i was there. but, not on a bun. no idea what the meat was or what was in the sauce but they were very tasty.

Souvlaki is correct.. Actually lots of Greek places popping up all over the city. Like a Chipotle, but Mediterranean.

Is Souvlaki just the style of cooking? Or the name of the dish? It can be any type of meat, right?

I'd say yes.. Souvlaki is grilled on a rotisserie and served with pita. It can be lamb, beef, chicken, with or without the vegetables.

The food truck is called a Halal cart though, not hot dog cart.. and as mentioned before, New Yorkers call it street meat.

It's not quite Souvlaki, which is Greek. The Halal carts sell something similar. See this article here from a few years ago: Halal Cart Trend

Yes but there are souvlaki food trucks that sell souvlaki.. and halal carts that sell kabobs, so without knowing what cart the op ate from, I assumed he was either eating kabobs or souvlaki. either way, if it's from a food cart, it's street meat.

Those trucks are sketchy af and I wouldn't suggest eating that stuff. Better to make kabobs and tzatziki yourself at home with fresh, quality ingredients.

eta: the Halal trucks are very popular in Israel too, as weird as that is..
