I have a laptop that has always run extremely slow. I ran Seagate diagnostics tonight and it failed the "Short DST" test. Looks like I can get a replacement drive for about $45. How would I go about transferring over the OS (win 10)? There is nothing on this computer I care about, but i don't want to have to buy another copy of Windows. TIA.

Most of the drives come with cloning software, but if you're gonna replace the drive go with an SSD if you're looking for better performance. Probably pay twice as much for half the storage but it will be at least 30-40% faster than a spinner.

Cool deal, to do the clone will I need to get a USB external enclosure for the new drive?

My current drive is a super thin 7mm, will I need a certain kind of SSD to fit that space?

They make adapters to connect the new SSD to a USB port. LINK

. Can't say without a model number. Just because it came with a 7mm doesn't mean a 9.5 or 12.5 won't work. Depends on the depth of the space it mounts.

Looks like you can use a 9.5mm drive. Cool thing about your laptop is you can install an M.2 drive as well as or instead of a hard drive.

I use Macrium to create/apply my images. All you need is a CD/DVD (and DVD player) for the Macrium version of PE and a thumb drive to hold the image. It's pretty straight-forward.

If the laptop came with that version of Windows 10 on it, depending on the manufacturer then the Windows 10 license should be in the motherboard's firmware and should activate on its own on bootup. If it doesn't then just activate it manually.

This is a long time bump, but I finally got the new m.2 drive in after a huge backorder from Crucial, got it installed last night, let the clone software run through the night, and changed the bios setting to boot from the m.2 this morning. Unbelievable the difference!!

Noticed only one dimm in place, so I went ahead and ordered a matching one, I might be able to drag this refurb laptop on along for a few more years!

Yeah. A couple of years ago, I dropped in a terabyte SSD and it's WICKED fast. I'll probably never own a spinner again.

My laptop can go from the desktop to completely powered off and back up to the desktop in under 30 seconds.

It's frigging awesome. Things like an Excel workbook will be open and ready to go in about three seconds.
