I tried Maypop last night.

After a night of overpriced rum and tequila drinks at NOPSI, a group of seven of us went to Maypop.
It was a few minutes before 10, they close at eleven. My votes of Company Burger and Juan'sFlying Burrito were overruled. Plus we had a vegetarian with us. (Who ironically decided not to order anything )
So we sit right down. The decor is nice and warm, the wall art is impressive. Needing to sober up I simply got a coke and the Mrs got tea.
We were the only ones to order an appetizer.
We got the tartine because I wanted to try something with the fancy meat they have on display.
I failed to mention in a central location is four meat aging compartments full of meat. Yet there are no charcuterie plates. So I grabbed this dish which was an excellent choice.
Every bite was rich and delicious, I feel bad for savoring it so. Because no one else would get food for another half hour.
Long after the tarine was gone, our mains arrived. I got the Octopus pasta, keeping with my "when in a new place try the first listed entree that has an odd protein". It's an experiment that usually works.
It did on many levels. The pasta was delicious, the spice on the Octopus we superb. The meat tender. The suction cups each with a little pop of flavor. Then I bit hard into a bone that lodged in the roof of my mouth near my molar. Octopus don't have bones...
I pulled out out with a hint of iron taste to see a shard of sharp hard clear plastic. Though I kept eating, because it was good.
My wife on the other hand.....
The Malfatti.dumplings had the consistency and taste of playdough. Not using hyperbole. It tastedd like salty flour playdough. That very day my godchild had gave me a playdough burger and I oversold the pretend bite, so I know the taste.
Very bad dish. Didn't complain because when I offhand mentioned getting stabbed by the plastic the server turned pale. The manager comped my dish. It was really good so I didn't want to on top of it complain about the dumplings.
Me and my wife didn't care that the food came out at 10:45 & we sat at 10. We had appetizers but that upset everyone else.
Also they serve coke in 8oz bottles. I guess to look hip, but $3.50 for 8oz of coke? Lol
I'll stick with tea. Principle not actual price that bothers me.
Anyway 2/3 dishes were great.
Service was good, kitchen was slow.
I feel the same way I did after the only time I had MoPho.
It was good, but not so good I really have to go back.
I know Gullotta gets a lot of praise. I just prefer more traditional Asian, fusion never hit the buttons.
I didn't take pics of food, these are from Google.

The thing I like about Gullotta is that he’s not afraid to take risks. He doesn’t always hit a home run but when he does, look out.

NIce write up, excellent work.
Aside from the plastic and the play dough, your review has me wanting to try Maypop.
I know this isn’t the proper board, but my LG front loading washing machine sometimes has a bit of an odor coming out of it. I noticed that there is a little water left over in the drawer that you put the detergent in. What do you think this is.
TIA

Agree. The flavor profiles that he derives is off the chart. Not many places I have been to can make my taste buds no pun intended pop out of my mouth.

Your rear vent is clogged.
Or the soap dispenser has a cl9g in it

Right. When it was on, it as on. The octopus was like two separate dishes married together. You had an Indian influenced octopus curry on a traditional Italian white sauce pasta.

I had a fantastic veal shank there last month. Probably the best thing I’ve had in the last year.

Thanks for the reply.
How does one go about unclogging the rear vent and soap dispenser?

I love the inventiveness there. No one bats 1.000 when you take risks with food. Rarely are the dishes boring, for sure.

Maypop is great. Goto MoPho if you have not been, or even if you have.
