Surprised no thread on this (unless I missed it, in which case, ignore).

SPOILERS BELOW---

Just finished and I loved it. I wasn't sure what to expect, and Lyria's story didn't pique my interest until the ball really started rolling downhill. Ephraim's character was great, I kind of wish he wasn't a grey though, so they would develop another color like they've done with reds and golds. But I'll take it. The third act was brilliantly done, and I can't wait for more Apollonius and Lysander. Also, there's no way Cassius is really dead, right?

Didn't read your post, but I'll be in here in a couple weeks. I wanted to re-listen to the others first. I just finished Red Rising this morning.

Finished it last night, loved it as well. The writing is worlds better than the first three as well. I don't think Cassius is gone, there was no proof or resolution of it (Lysander never saw his body or anything) and they dropped the subject pretty quick once they said he was dead. But if he is, Damn that Ionian witch

Just finished it in the office 2 minutes ago. Was in the 90% range when you started this post so knew I'd come back when i finished today.

Thought it was very well done, still not sure I love the 4 points of view approach, but it worked pretty well and didn't make the book unduly burdensome (like the GOT books are at times).

Just finished this evening.

SPOILERS AHEAD

I really liked it. I felt with the story being widened by the new POV's that it didn't get as "deep" as the previous books. Not as much time passes, it seems, from start to end compared to the others. And talk about holy friggin cliffhangers...The kids and Ephraim end their story plummeting through the air seconds before crashing, Lyria ends with getting kidnapped, Lysander ends with pledging to the cause of the new war for the rim, and mf'ing Darrow ends on his way to save millions on Mercury but not before enraging the most deadly character left on the board. Geez. When does the next one come out???

And yeah Cassius...I don't know.

I really wonder what Victra is going to do with Lyria. She was pissed enough to attack an escort of republic heavies and lionguards just to get to her, even though lyria was proven to be innocent?? Definitely interested to see what happens with that story line

Just finished! Really good overall, my thoughts would be as follows:

-Loved the new characters! As mentioned, I was apprehensive at first, but Emphraim and Lyria were both great. Emphraim had a bit of a tortured version of Lando Calrissean storyline to him.

-Loooooved the Raa people. They sorta reminded me of the Starks in how adamant they (or some of them) are about honor. Romulus was awesome, and I can't wait to see Diomedes unleashed. They make it sound like he could takedown Aja in her prime.

-Reeeeeally liked what they did with Cassius and Lysander. That relationship was perfect. I also think it was very well-conceived that they were able to get you to basically pull for someone in Lysander who is likely to become an antagonist to Darrow. That's awful tough to do. I thought his plan to Dido in the end was going to be to marry Serephanie or whatever her name was to unite the families.

-As much as I hate to think about not getting him again, I hope Cassius is dead. He went out like a GD boss and was true to himself throughout, and at some point a main character has to die from time to time. I really don't want to find out he's alive and now there's some new plot about Lysander choosing him or his new plan. That sounds kinda lame.

My only major criticisms would be:

-I know it's a common storyline in so many fantasy / fiction books, but I just can never truly get onboard with the "let's break a super dangerous person that we previously captured out of jail so that he can help us" plan. It's just too fricking stupid of an idea for me to ever be fully onboard.

-Not enough Sevro / Howlers. The only downside of the new characters was that we didn't get the typical time we get with Sevro and the Howlers. There's pretty much no way around this, but I will never be able to get enough of Darrow and Sevro's relationship, although I do think he did a good job giving it a bit more depth.

Is the Amazon date for the fifth book correct, September 11th?!?!?! That would be epic if he knocked two out that quickly, almost as if he had too much storyline and had to break it into two. That's sorta what this feels like given where this one left-off. Would be awesome and good on you Pierce if so!

Yes I saw that “Dark Age” is set to drop September of this year. I would expect a delay or two so maybe November could be the date. Also, the estimated page count for it right now is at 480 pages.

In that interview where brown discussed the “very soon” release date he also mentioned a major network is in discussion for making a series. Said he was happy to have the rights back because to much was being removed from the story to make a movie.

Finished Iron Gold over the weekend, and I really enjoyed it. I agree with another poster that the 4 story lines condensed the time-frame of the story. I didn't mind that, though. I really like where the story is going. This 3 way war is setting up to be pretty enthralling.

- Brown did a good job of making me change my opinions of characters throughout the story. I hated Lyria and Ephraim right when shite was going down, but they grew on me towards the end of the book.
- I also loved how Cassius went out. I look at his story as a win win. If he isn't really dead, then that should be a fun twist. If he is dead, he went down like a hero.
- I am not really a fan of the Sevro Darrow "breakup". I know they are humans that have fights, but I just love the two of them together. It's a bit sad thinking Darrow will probably never be happy again in the story.
- I am very interested to find out who betrayed the Republic to Seraphina. If they gave a hint in the book that I missed, I would like to hear it.
- This next gripe may be because I just enjoyed ASOIAF so much, but I didn't really like how many of the POVs just paused themselves in this book. in ASOIAF, the story pretty much flows. When we get back to a POV later in the book, time has passed from the last time we saw the character. In Iron Gold, this just read like 4 separate books at times. Ephraim and Lyria were woven well together, though. I liked how we knew it was Dano that bumped Lyria in the city without expressly saying it. This is a small gripe that I wouldn't say damaged my impression of the book.
- I am very happy that we won't go long until the next book is out.

Took a little while to get used to the format but it kept getting better as it went on. I really hope they make this series into a movie.

I thought the way Brown took Cassius and Lysander's storylines was absolutely brilliant. They are borderline antagonists at the start of the story, but by the end of the story I was absolutely pulling for each of them. Cassius' arc was just fantastic, and personally I hope he's dead. Yea it would suck never seeing him again, but he went out so perfectly for his character.

Finally finished it. Stopped a while back then just finally got back into it.

Really enjoyed it.

So who does everyone think the Syndicate Queen is?

It's mentioned that the rumor is she's Obsidian, and someone else mentions a Red.

If it's a known character and it's an Obsidian then Sefi is the obvious front runner.

If it's a Red, which I don't believe, then Harmony would be an obvious choice, but she's mentioned, not by name, as a leader of the Red Hand in an early Lyria chapter so I don't think it would be her.

If the rumors are just to throw off the scent then could it be Victra?

Is it even actually a female? Maybe Quicksilver?

Oh and Cassius has to be alive. I don't see Diomedes having him killed after Cassius defended his honor time and time again during the blood feud. He seems too honorable.

I didn't enjoy Iron Gold like I did the previous 3. Hopefully Dark Age brings it back for me.

Things I didn't like :
1.Multiple POVs.
2.Darrow becoming a moron and Sevro being the one with a brain.
3.I get the Rim coming back into play, but not the way they were.

I was obsessed with first 3. Read them all within 3 weeks, while Iron Gold took me 3 weeks because I didn't look forward to picking it up, as I did the previous 3.

Obviously, just my opinion.

I don't like reading about them fighting because it's a lot of fun when they are rolling together, but I think it does fit the characters. Darrow was born into this war. He has been fighting this battle his whole life. His original love was killed over all of this. He loves Mustang and his son, but they are not everything to him.

The Barca trigger into this war was the death of his mother who was a red. So, he and his father weren't born into the battle. It's very important to both of them, but family and love were the catalyst. Now, Sevro has his family. It has made him a bit more deliberate on his decisions.

So, I can see the reasoning behind Darrow having a one track mind with the war that doesn't always result in the best decisions. I don't really enjoy that part of the story, but I can see where it came from.
