I have been tasked with researching some analytical software to assist our firm and was wondering if anyone had recommendations? Would be used for external audit and compliance work.

We use that for our audits but do they have analytical add ons for something?

What type of analytic work are you looking to complete?
We use IDEA. It is set up in a similar fashion as Microsoft Office. Learning curve is not near as steep as Audit Command Language (ACL).

ACL
It should cost you anywhere between 2-5k per license depending on what you need.

Not sure if IDEA or ACL are suitable for smaller size firms. The licenses are extremely expensive.
IDEA is by far the best data analysis software in my opinion. I have experience with IDEA, ACL and ActiveData.
ActiveData is most suitable for smaller size firms as it is much cheaper. It comes as an add-on to Excel. It can do most of the data analysis IDEA can do.

Agreed, I've been at firms that use both IDEA and Active data.
IDEA can do a lot more than active data can, but 90% of the time you will just be using basic functions for analysis which can be done with either.

I don't know what your needs and/or budget are, but I really like Alteryx. Quite frankly, I don't even really know how much it costs. I have fair knowledge and skills with ACL and IDEA and Alteryx is much better IMO.

I'll have to ask our A&A group what they use if anything... I feel like all I see them using is excel templates from PPC =)

Couldn't agree more. Although, you really miss IDEA if you don't have it for those remaining 10% of the time.
