I remember as a kid circa 1980 watching a Tara-Broadmoor game that packed Memorial Stadium...at least 20,000 were there.

My dad always tells the story of the stadium being packed for that game. That was his senior year at Tara. Cross-neighborhood rivals both undefeated.

It is a shame that kids in this area will never get to experience the days when district titles and playoff bids meant something. Area high school football was pretty intense come playoff time back in the day. There were only 4 classifications back then, and you actually had to earn your playoff bid. Only 4 state champions...not 9. No 1-9 teams made the playoffs.

The game I mentioned earlier when Tara and Broadmoor packed Memorial Stadium was the last game of the season. A district title was on the line. And even bigger than that, bragging rights were at stake, with Airline HIghway near the current mid-city being the cutoff. If you lived west of Airline, you went to Tara. East of Airline, you went to Broadmoor. It was a bitter rivalry....the likes of which are totally non-existent in BR these days.

Even though that rivalry was heated, it was nice to live in a city where communities and neighborhoods meant something. There was a lot of school spirit and pride because you went to the school in your neighborhood. And then the desegregation order came in the early 80's and ruined the schools, then eventually the neighborhoods, then finally the entire city.

I was about 10 and my dad brought me to that game. We lived in the SE part of town, which was newly developed at the time, so we had no rooting interest...we just showed up because it was a big game and since I was just getting into sports, it was cool to be part of such a big crowd.

As for the game itself....my memories are fuzzy, but maybe you can tell me if I am right or wrong based on your dad's stories. I think Broadmoor won. I believe that they jumped out to a huge lead....maybe like 42-7...and Tara scored some garbage time TD's and the score ended up something like 42-27. Would be curious to see if I am remembering it correctly...

Likely not...as near as I can figure by searching the Internets, his senior year was 1979. I am almost certain the game I referenced above took place in 1980....though I could be mistaken.

judge parker killed most of that....

wild cards and 5 classes diluted playoffs somewhat... and of course now the split..

but the erosion of schools and community pride in EBR was all on judge parker's hands...

without him there is no bishop/st mikes, PBS, Dunham/trafton......

I think that about sums up how the game went. Couldn't tell you the score though. My dad shouldn't have been a part of that Tara team. They lived in Cedarcrest. All of his siblings went to Woodlawn and right before he was starting high school they switched the districts around because of the expansion into SE BR, so instead of sitting out of sports for a year by going to Woodlawn, he went to Tara.

District switching by school board would not have meant sitting out a year

I agree with all this 100 billionty percent. I think there have been long threads on other forums about this in the past, but that single decision by the judge ruined Baton Rouge forever and 30+years later we are paying the price. People who are too young to remember BR in the 80's have a hard time believing what a decent city this used to be.

I don't argue the premise of desegregating the schools. It was done because the inner city schools were definitely not getting the same funding that the suburban schools were getting...but the simple answer would have been just to increase funding to those schools instead of uprooting an entire community.

But that is a different thread for a different day.

In 1977 it did apparently. They rearranged school zones before he started high school.

something else had to be in play.

if zone changed to school x from school y prior to HS - school x immediately eligible at newly zoned school

zone change while in school - unless deseg order in play - fine to stay or go....

98, West Monroe at Catholic BR was the most packed playoff game I've seen in Memorial.

99 Evangel vs Catholic BR at Olympia was most packed I've seen Olympia.
