I see they are still doing construction on the concrete bleachers. In late-July.
Will it be ready in time for football season???

I remember as a kid circa 1980 watching a Tara-Broadmoor game that packed Memorial Stadium...at least 20,000 were there. Now with the sorry state of public schools in this town, and the location of the stadium, there are games that barely draw 200 fans. It's sad.

Memorial held a water skiing show In the 70's

And a bowl game or 2 in the early 70's.
And Southern played their games there for a year or 2 in the 80's while their stadium was being renovated.

Memorial is a neat little stadium. It's a shame it's shite in a shite location now.

I saw Terry Bradshaw and LA Tech play in the Grantland Rice Bowl in Memorial Stadium. In the 70's most of our high school games were there.

I would be curious to know what year it opened and who some of the legends were that played there. I can only date it back to the early 70's. I doubt it's old enough that Billy Cannon or Jimmy Taylor might have played HS ball there...and I don't know what all schools existed in the 60's who might have been tenants. Broadmoor and Tara opened in the 70's. McKinley was around I think...but might have played on their campus. Istrouma High had their own stadium too I believe. I don't know where BRHS played.
Any old timers here with some knowledge?
ETA: apparently they started playing HS games there in 1956. Would love to hear if anyone has memories of games they might have seen there. The oldest recounts I have heard have been about the earlier-mentioned Grantland Rice Bowl in the 70s

Memorial Stadium opened in '52. Cannon and Taylor absolutely played there in HS.

My grandfather was QB for that istrouma team with Cannon.
He used to tell me him and his brother would make him cry every practice.

Went to a game between Bogalusa and Istrouma in the early 60s.

I know as of the 90's, Istrouma had their own stadium on campus....do you know if they had it back then and maybe just played "big games" at Memorial since it was bigger?
Also, even though they are 2 hours apart, weren't Istrouma and Bogalusa actually in the same district back then?

Bogalusa used to be a thriving little place... 1947 and 1969 state champions in the highest classification... and made the finals again in 1970

Istrouma started using their stadium in th mid 70's and hosted a lot of games as all the other schools used Memorial or Olympia and each stadium had 4 games a week. East Ascension was in the same district as the BR schools and hosted a lot of games.
In 1964, the Friday before Hurricane Hilda hit LA, my brother was a Freshman at Catholic High in the band and they had a game at Memorial. My father was at the game and said the light poles swayed in the wind. No cancellations in the 60's

Where was it played?
For that matter, where were the HS finals played before the Dome? Did the higher seed get to host? Or was there another neutral site?

Most I've ever seen at a local hs football game was a couple years back, STA v. EA crammed 12,000 people standing room only to watch that game decide a division title and a playoff spot. St. Amant's population is only just over 10,000 people. Gonzales has only 10,000 as well. That means more than half of the people who live in those two towns was in attendance. One of the loudest and most intense football games I've ever witnessed.
