Does anyone have experience fishing from the docks in the bay at the sandestin beach resort in Destin? What bait to use?

Don't remember docks, are they new? I'd check to make sure they allow it, they're a little cheeky about things sometimes.

Yeah there are two of them that go out into the bay and you can fish them made sure of it already! You just can't fish the marina docks!

I've seen tons of hard heads caught on shrimp
Have heard tales of sports, reds and drum...but never saw them caught

Typical ot response is it's trashy. Otherwise I would say go for it.

I've caught bass in the ponds out there before

I've never fished the docks but I sometimes fish out a couple hundred yards to the north in my skiff. Lot's of neat grass beds and sometimes there's some nice reds and trout in the area. If you could bring a yak you could have a good time checking out the grass beds. I use a 7M topwater mirror lure. As for the dock, guess one could catch almost anything. With the hot weather early and late would be the best times. Good Luck...

Lots of hard heads, small pin fish and a few small croakers can be caught on dead shrimp. Not much else. Someone out there told me a story about a time a guy caught a redfish once. My daughter was 2 or 3 at the time and loved it but I wouldn't waste my time if it was just me. There are bass in the ponds around the grounds, and i think they have boat and/ or kayak rentals.

I've worked on those docks for many years. Huge redfish and nice specks can be caught, along with small triple tail. Live shrimp from the baitshop next to the marina and minnows (they are freshwater minnows but last long enough on your hook) on small circle hooks. They usually always have minnows but not always have shrimp, which work better. At night, white small buck tail jig if you don't have live bait. Work close to and under the docks. You have to wait a few minutes and not cast in between bites. They are smart and have seen it all. Last time we fished there my son caught a 5 pound speck and we probably caought around 10 total. And, we usually see 40 pound plus redfish swimming around but we don't mess with those. Good luck.

Have you looked at renting a kayak? You might be more successful if you expand your range. I just rented a fishing kayak for $175 for next week from Destin Kayak Rentals. Comes with paddle, pfd, anchor, crate, tow wheels and rudder. They also deliver and pick up which makes it really easy.

I stayed at Seascape last year just a little west from you and threw my yak in the truck bed coming in from Texas. We were in a condo on the ground, but still had to park in a parking lot. Just use a good bike lock cable and back in where its wedged with tough access.
Legion Park is a free launch and I was catching small reds in a little cove on close to the shore west of the golf course. Stewart Lake yielded some bass walking around on the bank.
I just throw in my yak now if we're going anywhere with water. Now I have a $40 rod case from Academy that will fit two rods with baitcasters on them (or just a bunch of rods without reels) that I cable lock in so the casual bed thief will have to do some unrigging and cutting to get out.
