I missed the discussion on this when the movie came out. What did this board think?

I thought it was a masterpiece. One of the best explorations of faith I've ever seen. It might be one of my favorite Scorsese films. But, I have a lot of favorite Scorsese films, so I'm not ranking it. It was just really good.

Thoughts?

Read the book, haven't seen the movie but want to. Was hoping it might go to Netflix or HBO but I might rent and watch soon.

I liked it. Kind of unclear at the end and different people will leave with different impressions.

I can see some saying faith does not matter and it is not real. There is no reason to hold onto faith at the cost of people dying and being tortured.

And some will leave with the thought faith is the only thing that matters and needs to be held onto no matter the cost.

Interesting and complicated movie about a time and place I knew nothing about.

As someone who doesn't have much religion-based faith, I saw it more of a comment on what faith is/can be than a judgement on faith.

God's answers to the faithful come with/in silence, he doesn't speak with sound directly to them. So therefore, it is OK if devotion to God comes in silence as well. To me, that is the big message of the movie.

Just saw it last night. Visually, it was beautiful and haunting at the same time. But it was one of the most uncomfortable, laborious movies I've seen in along time. And I think it was supposed to be that way.

As the viewer, you're finding out what's going on along with the priests and it makes for a very tense setting basically the whole movie.

Combune that and the faith aspect plus the horrifying things the Japs did to the priests and their own people... It makes for a film that will not apply to a mass audience at all. Plus the lack of musical score and constant background noise, you have one extremely uncomfortable film.

I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, but I appreciate movies like this when they're made. I think many people will see this because it's a Scorsese movie and not exactly know what they are getting themselves into.

It was OK. Not great IMO, but I appreciate Scorsese's effort.

Finally saw it. I'd put it up there with Scorcese's best films. In away, it's the movie he's spent his whole career working towards. He's always been a very Catholic director, and his Catholicism has informed even his non-religious movies (think Harvey Keitel in Mean Streets) and of course the Last Temptation of Christ.

But this is a visually stunning movie that also clearly owes a great debt to Kurosawa. He's trying to ape the master's ability to shoot landscapes, and he finally has the ability to do so.

But he also is able to adapt a book that is largely one character's internal struggle into a visual experience. This book has long been thought to be impossible to adapt, but I think he absolutely nailed it. The final shot was perfect as well.

I loved it.
