Best time of year to visit Boston?

Wanting to take my wife and kids to visit some of her family there this year. Windows are in June or September. I'm leaning towards September because of the heat and there not being any A/C up there.
Also, I'm a huge history buff and am hoping to be able to show my 8 year olds some cool things while we're there. Suggestions? TIA

Shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you the guide that I've sent to a bunch of people asking about Boston.

Also, if you're not going to have A/C then I would recommend September/early October. Will still be comfortable out and the leaves will be changing, which is beautiful up here.
As far as historical stuff, there's obviously a ton to see here. The Freedom Trail will be the best way to see most of the historical sites all in one afternoon. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes because it's a TON of walking.

Everywhere I've stayed in Boston has AC
It can get chilly at night in Boston even in June.

Some of the much older homes/apartments may not have A/C, but it's pretty unusual. I just assume the OP will be staying with the family he's going to visit and that's why he's assuming no A/C.

We went whale watching. I suppose it's a crap shoot on whether or not you'll see any, but they swam right up to the boat for us. It was an unforgettable experience.
Toured Sam Adams, had Boston Cream Pie at the Parker House Hotel (where it was created), did a guided walking tour around the Financial District (saw Sam Adams' grave, learned a lot about Faneuil), went to the aquarium, toured Fenway, walked through Boston Commons, did the Skywalk at the Prudential Center...my 7 year old daughter had a blast.
Lots of touristy things, but it was a good time. Drank a Sam Adams beer across the street from his grave at the Beantown Brewery. The only place to have a cold Sam Adams next to a cold Sam Adams.
Stayed at the Intercontinental in the Financial District. Nice hotel. Very convenient in terms of walking distance to restaurants and sights.
Get a T pass. Boston has, in my opinion, a very efficient train system.
I'd do it all over again without any changes if I brought a kid. If I were to go back with just adults I'd probably focus a lot more on historical things (although we hit quite a few).
We went in July. While it was hot, it wasn't anything like South LA. It'll be awesome if you go in the fall.

June. The sundresses on Newbury migrate elsewhere by September.
Honestly, Septemper in New England is great. Anyone in Boston always will say that fall in their favorite time of the year. Makes sense as its cold in winter, rains in spring, hot in summer, and perfect in fall.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I said no A/C because that's what my wife was told. I have no idea.

I've been in early October, it's great. The Sox might still be playing??
The Pats, Bruins & Celtics are definitely playing, the kids are mostly in school, Nantucket and Cape Cod are slow but not closed down, the foliage is changing (or changed ).
No snow or ice or crowds. I stay at the Marriott Long Wharf downtown, there's a subway station right there but you can walk to a bunch of things from that location.
Have a great trip.
