Baton Rouge? How much sun does the ground get? What happened to the old grass?

Lots of sun but not "full" sun. Old grass is getting replaced because I'm raising the yard 4-6 inches and installing drainage system. The fill that I bring in will be very "sandy".
Yes, Baton Rouge

Go with centipede. Very low maintenance, it's called the lazy man's grass for a reason.

St. aug and Bermuda are your best options. I would only do Bermuda if I were working with large acreage though. The only advantage to centipede is it can be seeded but very costly to seed. Centipede is typically more expensive than st aug as sod. if your going to sod do the st aug.

if you are looking for something that is pretty low maintenance after established, then centipede would be my choice. negatives are that it doesn't grow in shade very well, and it takes a hell of a long time to cover any bare spots, etc.
If you want something that will cover quickly and is tolerant of shade from time to time, then st augustine. negatives are that it requires a decent amount of water and, when thriving, you have to cut it frequently.

This is wrong, st aug is 175-190 per pallet, centipede is 150-170 per pallet.
OP, I'd go with centipede if your yard is sunny, st. aug if shady. If bringing in river silt I would look at just seeding as you will have so many weeds in the silt that they will take over the grass you sod in a couple years.

Dang. Both are $135 a pallet around Shreveport.
I got Centipede and hate it. I guess if you take extra care of it, it would be fine. But if you get weeds, it's not aggressive enough to choke them out.
it also turns BROWN earlier than most grasses. Not yellow, BROWN.
Also, mine needs way too much water.
