Who's going hunting?
And check out this neat story in the NYT about it LINK
The story is old, but everyone is still off in VP today, and the whole parish might get off now for all I know.

Ville Platte High School shut down at noon on Friday. Sacred Heart High School did not open at all. Friday night schoolboy football - a consuming passion in this Cajun prairie town of 9,000 - was pushed back to Thursday night this week. Friday, instead, was a day for preparing, for loading pickup trucks with guns, pots, stoves, generators and all-terrain vehicles, and for heading into the woods.

I cannot fricking wait to go convert little fuzzy helpless animals into deliciousness.

I'm from Ville Platte; don't live there anymore but I remember in high school all football games were moved to Thursday and we actually had school on Friday.
But there wasn't a boy to be found...it was all female students on that day.
And there wasn't a MAN to be found in town unless you were the police or fireman who got the short end of the schedule.

Times are changing! Public schools are open today, parochial school is closed. The parish was pressured into not taking "squirrel day" off so they changed it to "budget day" and now have stopped the long time tradition.

It's tradition for all the locals to pack up everything and go on weekend long trips away from their normal hunting spots. Many go to state or federal reserves and camp for the weekend or whole week. The story is not really far off from the truth.

Yep, it used to be HUGE down here. It's still pretty big, but back when I was in high school it was really something. Mamou High and the Ville Platte schools were all empty. I don't know about the rest of them in Evangeline Parish, but I'd guess it was the same.

That was changed a few years back. There used to be a Superintendant who was a squirrel hunter. L. Broussard. He enacted that 1/2 day back in the 80's or early 90's. Made Paul Harvey.

I know him well. He was one of my teachers before he became Superintendent.
