It looks beautiful on Google images and I want to take the wife and see it with her in person. What is the fee to get in the park? Are there any areas I should avoid?

Thank you.

We did Upper Antelope Canyon last April with Antelope Canyon Tours. It’s on Navajo land and the only way to see it was with an authorized tour provider. Very, very strict Covid protocols (including strict mask mandate) were in place at that time. Other than that, our guide was great and super helpful with getting great pictures.

You can bring your phone into the Canyon, correct?

Not being allowed to bring my phone is what turned me off about Grand Canyon West, but I still may go.

Yes, phones were allowed. The guide took our photos with my phone.

Nice.

Where did you drive in from?

We will be driving in from Vegas. It’s going to be a haul, but what the heck…

Also, how much did your tour guide cost?

We were on a Vegas / Sedona / GC / Zion road trip. That morning we woke up at El Tovar at the GC south rim. We got up early and went out the park’s east entrance (no stopping because we had already made all our stops when coming through that entrance from Sedona), then headed north to Page. We stopped at Horseshoe Bend, then reported for our 2 pm tour. After that was over we continued north to the Zion Lodge. It was a long day, but I wouldn’t change it. Having seen Horseshoe Bend and Upper Antelope Canyon (husband has two bad knees so no desire for Lower Antelope), there was no reason for us to stay in Page vs pushing on to Utah.

I just checked our confirm and it was $289 for 3 of us for the 1.5 hour “Sightseer’s Tour”. One was a child, but I can’t tell from the confirm whether that total reflected a discounted rate for her. Pricey, but I’m glad we did it. Wish we had been there at a time without the Covid restrictions, but we still enjoyed it. It was closed for a long time, so I guess I was just happy it reopened in time for our trip.

We did the lower I believe in Nov 2021. It was like $60 each? Something around there.

You go with a guide and its as said about 1.5-2 hours at most. Pictures are not a problem our guide took our photos.

Its basically a tourist racket, there's like 2 companies that do the lower and 2 that do the upper. But its definitely worth it.

The upper is busier and more expensive but our guide seemed to prefer the lower, I can't remember why? We did the lower because it was cheaper and didn't know how good it would be.

The tours are mostly on indian reservation, one of the reasons you have to have a guide. But there's other canyons around there that are similar they are just natural. Where you take the tours they have metal stairs and handrails and what not built in. Whenever it rains there is tons (literally) of sand washed in and they have to go in and shovel it out.

ETA: The pictures and online act like you hike in. I mean you walk in, but the big tourist offices that sell snacks, art, etc with large parking lots for tourist buses are like 200 yards from the canyon. So its far from a "hike".

Is this just a general blanket statement? Will you not go to an incredibly unique and beautiful place because at some point in time (possibly not now, but in the past) they enforced masks?

Navajo Nation got hit REALLY HARD with COVID deaths fwiw. The level of poverty out there is horrible. There is a good percentage of the population that don’t even have running water in their homes. So just saying…..they have a reason for the stricter standards. They just elected a new President to Navajo Nation so keep checking back to see if anything has relaxed restrictions wise.

Quick Google of some of the tour websites shows that they still require masks but you can take them off for quick photos and hiking as long as you keep your distance.

My group actually preferred the lower canyon when we went as well, but both the upper and lower canyons are great and worth visiting. The lower canyon not being as packed means you aren't as rushed touring it, which made us like it better. I'd recommend hitting both upper and lower if you are making the visit there (and seeing horseshoe bend of course).

I took my family this past summer to the Grand Canyon and the area. I looked up the options for Antelope Canyon and wasn't sure whether to do either the upper or lower because of cost and some reviews made it seem like the tour guides will push you through. So I ended up finding this one - Antelope Valley Canyon Tours- Ligai Si' Anii. It's technically not part of the upper or lower. But according to our guide, the same family of siblings own the whole thing and are the ones doing the tours. We did have to wear masks at first because he drove us to the Canyon. But once there, we took them off. He did a great job of walking us through, taking time to give little side notes about plants and animals, history etc. The actual Canyon may not be quite as beautiful as what you see of upper/lower, but this one was well worth it.

For the ones who have done both the upper and the lower is the walk/hike bad? We are going to Grand Canyon/Zion/Bryce in April and have a handicap child with us. I would love to be able to do Antelope Canyon. She is able to walk with assistance but we also have a child carrier to carry her on our back. Just need some advice

The walk is like a half mile total, maybe a mile at most. I’m sure the tours say? It maybe more than that but it’s really not a ‘hike’. It’s very short. But it’s up and down the creek and stairs and what not. It’s definitely not handicap friendly, but depending on the situation potentially doable.

We did Antelope Canyon X this past summer. Got the best of both worlds as it’s two canyons on the hike. One V shaped and one A shaped. Found it to be much less expensive than the traditional Antelope Canyon. Some of the pictures we got were amazing! I can never figure out how to post photos, but their advertisement photos are legit.

This video shows the walk back to the bus/van after you exit Upper Antelope Canyon. I think it’s just under a mile and must be done in under 15 minutes. Since Covid, the tour is one way only. This climb is because you have to go up and over the Canyon (not allowed to go back through it in reverse).

There is only a short, flat walk from the bus/van to the mouth of the Canyon, and the walk through the Canyon itself is flat and not particularly long.

Does Antelope Canyon have a website where I can reserve a tour guide or can I just drive in and pay on the spot?

You can find various tour companies online and book a tour with them.

You can’t just “drive in” to the spot. The tours have to drive you there.

I’ve done it twice before COViD and each tour I went on was booked up in advance. So you wouldn’t have been able to just walk in and pay for a tour that day.
