I have read every link on google about Uruguay (at least the first few pages). I was hoping somebody here had some insider details.
The thread has been axed anyways. Very sad. I don't understand why...

From 4/18 of this year
quote:
Exercise increased caution in Uruguay due to crime.
Country Summary: Violent crimes, such as homicides, armed robberies, car jackings, and thefts occur throughout the country and in urban areas frequented by U.S. government personnel, day and night. Criminals commonly travel in pairs on motorcycles to approach unsuspecting victims with a weapon and demand personal belongings. Armed criminals also target grocery stores, restaurants, financial centers, and small businesses, in which innocent bystanders are often victimized.

I've been to Montevideo. A lot of my in laws from Venezuela (that didn't move to Florida or Texas) moved there. It was very clean and nice. It was very white for Latin America, not a lot of Indigenous or Afro Latinos like in other parts of South America (mostly Spaniards but also some Italians, Germans, and Eastern Europeans). Montevideo seemed like a first world city but I've heard the rural part of the country isn't like that and that there's poverty there (not favela levels but still poor).

Thanks for the insight! Pretty sure most of the crime is in Montevideo and anyways if I did make the move I would rather live on a ranch in the countryside personally.
And yeah, pretty sure they killed off what little natives they had in the beginning of the colony.
