They have every right to be mad.
Kelly is basically telling them there is a ceiling on their program, and he has a better shot at winning championships elsewhere.
That's a tough thing to stomach, especially for a program with the history and tradition of, what Beano Cook called, the "University of College Football".

Short of a perfect season with every high IQ AND highly talented recruited player available on the field they are at their ceiling.
