That’s my educated guess.
The guy was an All-American defensive LINEMAN.
THEN, he was an offensive line coach, running game coordinator, and then, eventually, offensive coordinator who can score some points.
THEN was named coach of the year multiple times - was offered high-profile jobs in which he turned down those interviews - rumored to have been offered multiple NFL positions as well - of which he (supposedly) turned down.
Oh yea, and he’s also ONLY 42 years old.
This is a Woodward pick; a diamond in the rough type hire.
That’s my guess and I’m sticking to it.

Nothing about Woodward’s history suggests he goes for diamond in the rough type.
Woodward’s hires follow a pretty straightforward process - find very big name, get them here regardless of price.
If he were a money manager, no one would consider him a value manager.

He's not a diamond in the rough. He's a diamond laying right out in the field in the state of Iowa. He is widely regarded as an outstanding coach who is ready for a bigger opportunity.

He's the first call for a vacancy at Ohio State, Michigan or Notre Dame right now.
